Man who made girlfriend walk naked on street, and recorded it, pleads not guilty

A New York City man who made his girlfriend strip and walk around on a Harlem street during a cold winter day is facing prison.

Jasson Melo, 22, was arraigned in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday for coercion, assault and related charges stemming from the January incident, which garnered a lot of attention online and in the media.

"In this case the defendant became enraged (when he) found pictures of other men on her phone," Assistant District Attorney Caitlin Connolly stated at his arraignment, according to the New York Daily News.

According to news accounts from the time, Melo also beat and choked his girlfriend, whose name has been kept out of the press, in front of her 3-year-old child.

He then allegedly threatened to kill her if she didn’t walk out into the freezing day.

Melo recorded her walking down the street, taunting her in Spanish saying things like, “Participate, pretty doggie,” “pay the price of your shame” and “pose there, next to the rest of the trash.”

He distributed the video to a number of people, and it quickly leaked out. He also posted videos of himself boasting about the incident and, later – after social media condemned him for his abusive behavior – apologizing “to all the women” for his actions.

Connolly said that Melo further incriminated himself by leaving a voicemail admitting what he’d done.

At the arraignment, he pleaded not guilty with the help of a Spanish translator.

If convicted on all charges, Melo faces a maximum of 7 years in prison. Prosecutors are recommending a 1- to 3-year sentence if he agrees to plead guilty.

He was freed pending trial on $10,000 bail.

Dallas Cop Files Lawsuit Against Black Lives Matter, Obama

A Dallas Police sergeant filed a lawsuit on Friday against Black Lives Matter and its supporters, alleging the group is inciting a race war.

Sgt. Demetrick Pennie, a 17-year veteran of the force, is seeking between $500 million and $1.5 billion in the complaint filed in federal court, the Dallas Morning News reported.

The defendants in the class-action suit include Black Lives Matter; President Obama; Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton; the Rev. Al Sharpton; Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and billionaire activist George Soros.

“Defendants incite people to violence and cause violence by telling those people that they are under attack. Defendants are encouraging disaffected blacks, Black Muslims, Muslims and others allied with them including certain whites to ignore, disrespect, and assault law enforcement officials, and commit violence and lethal force,” the lawsuit states, according to the paper.

The lawsuit alleges the defendants "have repeatedly incited their supporters and others to engage in threats of and attacks to cause serious bodily injury or death upon police officers and other law enforcement persons of all races and ethnicities."

The lawsuit was filed hours before two Texas police officers were injured in a shooting while responding to a suicide call.

Pennie, who is black, is being represented by Larry Klayman, founder of the organization Freedom Watch.

“The defendants, if not legally reined in, are allegedly responsible, along with others, for igniting a race war that will ultimately totally destroy the freedoms that our Founding Fathers bequeathed to us,” Klayman said in a press release.

Black voters are turning from Clinton to Trump in new poll

Donald Trump is gaining support among African-American voters — whose enthusiasm for Hillary Clinton is eroding, a tracking poll released Saturday revealed.

Trump saw a 16.5 percentage-point increase in backing from African-American voters in a Los Angeles Times/University of Southern California tracking poll, up from 3.1 percent on Sept. 10 to 19.6 percent through Friday.

Meanwhile, the same poll showed Clinton’s support among that group plummeting from 90.4 percent on Sept. 10 to 71.4 percent.

Clinton’s nearly 20-point crash began Sunday, said Dan Schnur of USC. Sunday was the day Clinton was recorded collapsing while entering a Secret Service van at a 9/11 event.

The survey, which spanned through Friday, included the days in which Trump reignited the divisive “birther” issue — which critics contend is a thinly veiled attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the country’s first black president.

Late Wednesday, Trump had refused to acknowledge that President Obama was born in the United States, demurring on the topic in a Washington Post interview published the next day.

But at a bizarre press conference at Trump International, his new ­hotel in Washington, DC, on Friday, the tycoon conceded, “President Barack Obama was born in the United States, period.”

For the week, the poll found a 6-point rise for Trump. The Republican is now at 47.2 percent of the vote to Clinton’s 41.2 percent.

“It’s the largest shift we’ve seen in a one-week period since we began polling in July,” Schnur said.

President Barack Obama told a predominantly black audience it would be a “personal insult” if they don’t back Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in the November presidential elections.

Speaking at the Congressional Black Caucus dinner on Saturday night, Obama said he would take it as an “insult to [his] legacy” if there isn’t a strong black turnout for Clinton.

"My name may not be on the ballot, but our progress is on the ballot," he said. "Tolerance is on the ballot. Democracy is on the ballot. Justice is on the ballot. Good schools are on the ballot, ending mass incarceration, that’s on the ballot right now.”


Obama used the civil rights movement and the struggle to enable African Americans to get the vote to remind the audience of the importance of casting their ballots.

“I am reminded of all those folks who had to count bubbles in a bar of soap, beaten trying to register voters in Mississippi,” he said. “Risked everything so that they could pull that lever. So, if I hear anybody saying their vote does not matter, that it doesn't matter who we elect, read up on your history. It matters.”

The president pressed the crowd to give him a good send-off by registering people to vote. “If you care about our legacy, realize everything we stand for is at stake, on the progress we have made is at stake in this election,” he said.

Obama attacked Republican candidate Donald Trump’s claim that black Americans have “nothing to lose” in voting for Trump over Clinton.  “[Trump] says we’ve got nothing left to lose, so we might as well support somebody who has fought against civil rights and fought against equality and who has shown no regard for working people for most of his life,” Obama said. “Well, we do have challenges. But we’re not stupid.”

Obama has been criticized for failing to do enough for black Americans during his presidency. Many Americans feel that the first black president has failed to make enough progress for the black community. The founding of the Black Lives Matter movement, numerous examples of police brutality against black people, and a lack of employment opportunities have been cited indications that Obama has not done enough.

On the other hand, Obama has been commended for granting clemency to prisoners charged with minor offences, and has recently announced the phasing out of the so-called, for profit prisons. Obama pushed for a $75 million police body camera program in response to the police killings of unarmed black men, and created initiatives to support black youths.

Clinton also spoke at the event, where she received the Trailblazer award for being the first female presidential candidate for a major US political party. She praised the Obama family and dismissed Trump’s ‘birther’ comments.

Obama joked with the crowd about Trump’s declaration that Obama was in fact born in the US. The billionaire businessman recently convened a press conference to announce that he no longer believes Obama was not born in America.

“There’s an extra spring in my step tonight. I don’t know about you guys, but I am so relieved that the whole birther thing is over,” Obama said. “I mean, ISIL, North Korea, poverty, climate change ― none of those things weighed on my mind like the validity of my birth certificate. And to think that with just 124 days to go, under the wire we got that resolved. That’s a boost for me in the home stretch.”

‘Rule 41’ change allows FBI ‘mass surveillance’ if Congress does nothing (VIDEO)

The deadline is December 1. If Congress fails to act, the FBI gains the power to hack and surveil an unlimited number of computers, based on just one warrant from any federal judge. “Rule 41” marks a new line drawn in the cybersecurity-privacy battle.

The US court system has a process through which the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure are amended, and because these decisions are not made by elected officials, they are not supposed to deal with changes in the law or enacting policy.

Changes to Rule 41, however, will remove the limits on how the FBI can obtain search warrants for computer networks. As of now, a federal judge may authorize the feds to install malware to hack computers suspected to be involved in criminal activity. That judge may only issue the warrant when the device is in his or her jurisdiction, though. That barrier is scheduled to be lifted December 1, unless Congress prevents it.

It means it will be legal for the government to “hack anyone,” as Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) puts it in an op-ed article he helped write for Wired magazine Wednesday.

“The unintended consequences could be staggering,” the piece reads.

“With just six work weeks remaining on the Senate schedule and a long Congressional to-do list, time is running out,” it continues. The article calls for passage of Wyden’s Stop Mass Hacking Act to block the change.

Proponents of the automatic change say it will assist law enforcement in tracking cyber criminals, including terrorists and child pornographers. But the federal government’s secrecy surrounding its own cyber tools leaves skeptics doubting the official claims.

In an interview with RT, Derrick Broze of Activist Post warns the Rule 41 change represents “one more step in the march toward a total surveillance state.”

While that doesn’t ring of much optimism for the average citizen, Broze also points out that the government itself may face unintended consequences as well.

“It seems obvious that any tool the government puts out there with the intention of trying to catch criminals could easily be reverse-engineered and used against them or other innocent Americans,” Broze says, adding that the government could open itself up to lawsuits as a result.

Senator Wyden made similar points in a Senate floor speech on September 8, citing “scores of cybersecurity experts” who have written in opposition of the Rule 41 change. One of their key points, he said, was that rather than helping victims of cybercrimes, the expanded surveillance powers would risk further harm.

“You don't punish victims twice in America,” Wyden said. “You wouldn't punish the victims of a tax scam or a Ponzi scheme with a painful audit. That's what can happen here.”

While awareness of the Rule 41 change is only now reaching the mainstream, major technology firms have opposed it for some time. In February 2015, Google wrote the change had “constitutional, legal, and geopolitical concerns.”

More recently, Google has joined 49 other tech companies in a coalition united under the banner of “No global warrants.”

Pleas for congressional hearings on the matter have yet to be answered. In a June letter publicly released Friday, it is revealed that Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont), the top ranking minority member on the Judiciary Committee, and Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah), who also is on the committee, asked that Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) call a hearing on proposed Rule 41 changes.

“We recognize that the changing technological landscape and evolving threats require law enforcement to employ new techniques to investigate and prosecute crime,” the letter reads, according to Politico. “But these issues should be debated in a public forum by the American people and their elected representatives.”
