IMHO the best antidote is to date multiple guys/gals. That way you never have to worry about any one person breaking your heart. Oh and it's a hell of a lot more fun than playing the accordion with your toenails... :)

I haven't had any luck on this site but I've had quite a bit of luck on a few other sites. I think it all depends on what you're looking for (LTR, friend, FWB, potential spouse, etc.) and who's available at the time that fits the bill. Sometimes you get lucky and hit pay dirt right off the bat, other times it's slower going.

IF I were looking for a partner, (which I'm not, as I'm having a whole hell of a lot of fun without one these days), there are only a few qualities I'd require as absolutes MUSTS:

1) Superior intellect

2) Compassion/understanding

3) Excellent communication skills

and

4) Open-mindedness

Oh and I almost forgot the most important qualification of all, the ability to juggle strudel while playing Alexander's Ragtime Band on the accordion. :)

If you're looking primarily for intimate encounters, I'd suggest you check out AFF. This site is more geared towards dating and relationships as well as friendships.
