whatever happened to "it takes a village to raise a child"? i can recall a time when the neighborhood kids (myself included) where doing something after school (that kids do that they shouldn't) when one of the neighborhood dads who was off work that day caught us. he spanked each and every one of us and sent us to our respective houses. when my dad got home from work i was hoping that he would go over and kick the man's azz for spanking me. well the neighbor came over and told my dad what he had found and what he had done. my dad shook his hand, turned, closed the door, and spanked the tar out of me. i dare anyone to try to spank a neighbor's child nowadays

while I wouldn't advocate spanking the neighbor's children (as I didn't - or extremely seldom - spanked my own), I do agree with you that the "village" mentality of community is far too lacking - prolly the spread of urban "suburbs" and the growing mobile society that we have now

I think we have to look in places for a sense of community that are new and meet our current needs in the current environment

Hmmm my children where always spaned if they purposely hurt somebody, hurt their belongings or someones feelings. accidents didnt count, nor did something that was provoked. i wuld have no trouble spanking someone elses child. However I couldnt do it now. although there have been many times i have wanted to spank the parents when they are standing there with their children screaming and are trying to calm them by giving the child what he wants.

My children live in a motel full of truck drivers and other regulars who are part of our family, they have been brought up by a heaps of men who have time to muck around and have fun with them, they travel thousands of ks with these men in schol holidays and have learnt heaps , Not everything is what I want them to learn but they do have agreat time, and although the men can be rougher , they do teqach the kids to work hard and respect others,
