Topic: Who's behind the Boston Marathon bombings? 4 theories.

1. Islamist jihadists
This theory was inevitable in the worst attack on U.S. soil since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and it gained some initial credence from a New York Post report that a 20-year-old Saudi national had been picked up as a"person of interest." Police quickly threw cold water on that report, but then Boston TV station WABC reported that police are"searching for a darker skinned or black male with a black backpack and black sweatshirt, possibly foreign national from the accent of the individual."

SEE MORE: Boston is more than a marathon. It embodies the American spirit.

Another anonymous law enforcement official"notes that the manner of the attack suggests it may have been Al Qaeda inspired — if not Al Qaeda directed," says Christopher Dickey at The Daily Beast . That's because the construction of the bombs — gunpowder with ball-bearings and other shrapnel to maximize the damage — is similar to a bomb recipe shared by Al Qaeda"on its internet manuals for terrorist attacks."

Of course, not everyone is convinced."Horrific as this obviously was, it doesn't seem big enough" for an attack by Arab terrorists, says The Daily Beast's Tomasky ."Everything we know about their m.o. — the 1993 WTC bombing, the 2000 LAX plot, and 9-11 — suggests that they aim bigger."

2. Right-wing militia types
This theory, too, was inevitable. And most proponents point to the date — Patriots' Day — as a clue. Residents of Massachusetts and Maine celebrate Patriots' Day by taking the day off of work and re-enacting the first battles of the American Revolution, says Sommer Mathis at The Atlantic Cities ."But in recent years, Second Amendment activists and anti-government modern-day militia members have tried to co-opt the holiday, which also roughly marks the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing."

It's also"wise in these cases to remember that the 1995 bombing of the Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the bombing at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996 were carried out by Americans who espoused extreme right-wing causes," says The Daily Beast's Dickey .

SEE MORE: What the Boston Marathon means to a Bostonian

There's also the fact that the Boston Marathon fell on tax day this year, and the last mile of the race"was dedicated to Newtown victims," says Tomasky .

"But man you would have to be a really 100 percent out-there sicko to think that this was how you wanted to make a political statement about gun rights. I think there are dangerous extremists among that group, but I don't think even they would do or approve of doing something like this." [ Daily Beast ]

3. The government
"False flag" attack proponents wasted no time blaming the government for staging the Boston explosions to achieve their own ends, says Alex Seitz-Wald at Salon . First out of the gate was Alex Jones, who tweeted:"Our hearts go out to those that are hurt or killed #Boston marathon – but this thing stinks to high heaven #falseflag."
SEE MORE: The Boston bombing: fact and fiction

Then"Dan Bidondi, a 'reporter/analyist' (sic) for Alex Jones's InfoWars, managed to ask Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick the very first question in a nationally televised press conference," notes Slate's David Weigel :

Why were the loud speakers telling people in the audience to be calm moments before the bombs went off? Is this another false flag staged attack to take our civil liberties and promote homeland security while sticking their hands down our pants on the streets? [ Via Slate ]
"Patrick, looking on with a mixture of rage and pity, said 'no,' surely aware that he couldn't halt this guy's incipient Internet fame," says Weigel . But the inevitable Boston marathon"truthers" will have a hard time with this conspiracy theory. There were too many cameras and witnesses to"concoct a really compelling conspiracy theory," and the real-time fact-checking on Twitter has decimated the bad information that conspiracies need to thrive. For example, those"loud speakers" urging calm never happened.

4. A criminally insane lone wolf
There's also the possibility that this attack was perpetrated by some"local nutcase," says Tomasky at The Daily Beast ."I guess I am right now leaning in that least conspiratorial direction." Unfortunately, in our"open and free society," people can cause massive destruction with a few well-placed bombs. There's a decent chance the Boston marathon attackers were"motivated by simple revenge of some kind, or by nothing but the disease in someone's brain.&quot

Bombs that targeted the Boston Marathon on Monday may have been packed in pressure cookers, investigators say.

Images from a joint Homeland Security and FBI bulletin show the remains of a dark backpack, a detonation device and mangled pieces of metal.

Three people were killed and more than 170 injured when two devices exploded near the finish line of Monday's race.

Those who died were an eight-year-old boy, a woman aged 29 and a postgraduate student from China.

The BBC's Paul Adams, in Boston, says vigils for the victims were held across the city on Tuesday night as Bostonians still wrestled with why anyone would want to attack their much-loved marathon.

'Someone knows'

FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers told a news conference that pieces of nylon had been recovered from the scene, along with fragments of ball bearings and nails that were "possibly contained in a pressure-cooker device".

He said they were being sent to the agency's laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, where experts would reconstruct the devices to determine their make-up and components.

"The investigation is in its infancy," he added. "There are no claims of responsibility and the range of suspects and motives remains wide open."

Mr DesLauriers urged people to report anyone they had seen acting suspiciously.

"Someone knows who did this," he said.

The Associated Press quoted a source close to the investigation as saying that the bombs consisted of explosives placed in 1.6-gallon (6-litre) pressure cookers, one with shards of metal and ball bearings, the other with nails.

The bombs were put into black bags and left on the ground, the source said.

It has been reported that a circuit board and battery pack - parts of a triggering mechanism - were recovered.

And the lid of a pressure cooker, apparently blown off during the explosion, was found on the roof of a nearby building, an official said on Wednesday.

Doctors treating the wounded say their injuries indicate that the bombs contained metal shards and other shrapnel. A number of victims have had limbs amputated.

Boston Medical Center trauma surgery chief Peter Burke said hospitals were saving "large quantities" of fragments extracted from victims for the police. They include metal, plastic, wood and concrete.

At least 58 of the injured have been released from various hospitals around the city, according to AP. Of those that remain, 17 patients are listed as in a critical condition.

Speaking at the same news conference, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said the Boston community would "recover and heal" from the attack.

"This is one community. We are all in this together," he said.

President Obama will address an interfaith service in Boston for the victims on Thursday morning.

The White House said Mr Obama had cancelled a planned trip to Kansas to speak.

Earlier, President Obama condemned the bombings as a terrorist act...............

if you look at the mailbox again, the metal fence is wrapped around it, meaning the bomb went off behind the metal fence, not in front of it...

With sick inevitability, cybercriminals have exploited interest in the breaking news story of the explosions at the Boston Marathon by spreading malware.

Messages spammed out by attackers claim to contain a link to video footage of Monday's terrorist activity in Boston, with subject lines such as "2 Explosions at Boston Marathon"........

Other subject lines used in the campaign include:

* Aftermath to explosion at Boston Marathon
* Boston Explosion Caught on Video
* Video of Explosion at the Boston Marathon 2013

It's no surprise to see that the links used in the malicious email can vary - no doubt in an attempt to avoid rudimentary email filtering but they all appear to be based in Ukraine and Latvia.

If you make the mistake of clicking on the link, however, you are taken to a website which - while showing you genuine YouTube videos of the the horrific incident - attempts to infect your computer with a Windows Trojan horse that Sophos products detect as Troj/Tepfer-Q.....

If installed, the malware makes changes to the Registry and installs the following files, allowing hackers to gain remote access to infected computers:

<System>\drivers\npf.sys
<System>\Packet.dll
<System>\wpcap.dll

The file NPF.sys is registered as a new service named "NPF", with a display name of "WinPcap Packet Driver (NPF)".

Clearly, there are no depths to which cybercriminals are not prepared to stoop in their hunt for victims.

The sick truth is that malware authors and malicious hackers lose no sleep about exploiting the deaths of innocent people in their attempt to infect computers for the purposes of stealing money, resources and identities.

Remember to be on your guard against such tactics. Maybe it's time to get your news from legitimate news websites rather than an unsolicited email which arrives in your inbox?

Boston marathon attacks: Suspect arrested

Investigators have arrested a suspect in relation to Monday's Boston marathon bombings, law enforcement officials have told US media.

The breakthrough reportedly came from security video of a man dropping off a bag on the street near the race's finish line, before walking away.

The twin blasts killed an eight-year-old boy, a woman aged 29 and a postgraduate student from China.

Officials are due to hold a press conference at 17:00 ET (21:00 GMT).
