I never lend money I am not prepared to lose if that is the outcome, so, I also would count it a loss but would probably never lend to that person again. As 2K said, the lesson would have been learned.

Usually make a payment agreement + interest if you lending foremost w/ recepient's & witness signatures. Then, you shouldnt have any issue collecting cause you got backup.
