An 'Unstoppable,' Cataclysmic Glacier Meltdown is Already Underway

www.theverge.com/2014/5/12/5710314/an-unstoppable-cataclysmic-glacier-meltdown-is-already-underway

Dang, this one took so many twist and turns it almost made me dizzy. but what a load of pure crap. But just following the funding tells so much.

The other co-authors are Benjamin Smith at the UW and Brooke Medley, who did her doctorate at the UW and is now at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. The research was funded by the National Science Foundation and NASA.

Can you imagine a report by two government agencies and a revolving door with the researchers. But really what did they day?

The study considered future scenarios using faster or slower melt rates depending on the amount of future warming. The fastest melt rate led to the early stages lasting 200 years, after which the rapid-stage collapse began. The slowest melt rate kept most of the ice for more than a millennium before the onset of rapid collapse. The most likely scenarios may be between 200 and 500 years, Joughin said.

A high-resolution map of Thwaites Glacier’s thinning ice shelf. Warm circumpolar deep water is melting the underside of this floating shelf, leading to an ongoing speedup of Thwaites Glacier. This glacier now appears to be in the early stages of collapse, with full collapse potentially occurring within a few centuries. Collapse of this glacier would raise global sea level by several tens of centimeters, with a total rise by up to a few meters if it causes a broader collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

So the only thing absolutely positive in this whole report are the number of if and maybes slanted to meet the stringent demands of their sponsors, the government. So let me rush out real quick and get my ruler calibrated so I wont miss a single of those tens of centimeters of sea rise over the next 2 to 5 centuries. And if they ever get those ships out of the ice in Antarctica, I ask them to keep me informed so I will know if I need to change my ruler for something to measure a couple of meters.

Can you imagine, conservatives more intelligent (no I didn't say intellectual) than liberals. Now if they would only raise that level to understand you can't reform politicians of either flavor, they may get something done.

And just what the heck is the repugantcant and dumbocrat leaning independent? Isn't that somewhere in the same class as Army Intelligence? And a Pew report, is that related to Puuuu...ke.

But what the hey, keeps the little minded masses entertained until the next reality or sports show comes on the BoobTube.

Wow that didn't take long, here we have a reality show at it's finest, sponsored by our great government supplemented by the first Hollywood idiot, Harrison Ford.

But I really loved how they took this modified military jet with a huge carbon footprint to see how much CO2 and methane were in the atmosphere. Being this is such a brilliant scheme, they probably put the measuring instruments in the jet's exhaust.

Yeah, I thought this comment in the comment section summed this all up nicely:

Harrison!! You went to an 8th grade science teacher to learn the facts of 'Climate change'? What about asking the NASA astronauts who say it's all been exaggerated. Or top climate scientists with a different opinion. Don't we compare opinions anymore?

Common Core anyone? What about Agenda 21?

Or how about this one?

Wow...California science teacher of the year. Now you know why the performance of American students in science is plummeting. As much nonsense as you can fit in one video. The irony is so many viewers have had this type of science education and find no issue with this silliness.

Yep, common core should be able to complete the job, perfect little human robots.

The fact is that I know more about Global Warming than any could guess. I, in my tenure at NASA have dealt directly with the acquisition of data and had lunch with many of those who have done the studies. It wasn't my area of expertise but since I was traveling all over the world observing ice packs, glaciers, and snow caps in the winter (both hemispheres)and the reductions in the coral reefs and fish in the ocean by scuba, I had lots to talk about when I returned and sometimes before I left.

A main problem is that the facts get twisted to suit whatever political agenda someone is pushing. Al Gore had some facts but used them to push a bologna agenda. The "carbon tax credit" solution was always set up to be just another way to shift income from the "rich countries" to the "poor countries". It wasn't really expected to do much to reduce the amount of global warming caused by man. However, the fact is that man has released enough carbon dioxide and other global warming gases to significantly speed the warming of the planet far faster than what would happen naturally if the historic cycles were predictive.

The fact is that the oil companies have done an excellent job of buying misinformation to sell to the public that the whole problem is a hoax. It is not. It just isn't what some (mostly left wing) alarmists sell it to be.

It is a problem, It does cause instability in the atmosphere that caused new highs and lows in temperatures and give storms systems additional energy to have bigger tornadoes, more frequent snowstorms, larger hurricanes, longer lasting droughts and more extensive flooding. In other words, it causes exactly the types of unusual weather patterns we have been experiencing for recent years.

A major solution to the production of greenhouse gases would be the addition of new nuclear power plants which have safe designs and would feed our new electricity needs for years ... but there is too much false information out there to make it happen.

The technology has existed for years to run our cars on CNG (compressed natural gas) but the oil companies and the US government don't want that to happen since it would eliminate the need to import oil (which makes the oil companies a lot of money) and would take the US out of the "petrodollar" standard which now supports the value of the US dollar.

Honda, thinking the US would do the logical thing by expanding the availability of CNG nationwide in face of huge increases in oil prices, started mass producing the CNG Honda Civic ... and no one bought it due to no infrastructure... which is pretty stupid of the US since natural gas is available everywhere.

A CNG plug-in hybrid car would pretty much take care of the human addition to global warming if combined with nuke based electricity and widespread use.

Europe is in deep chit when the source of their fresh water is gone which may not be that far into the future.

From Wiki: Glaciers

Glaciers are noted as a vital water source due to their contribution to stream flow. Rising global temperatures have noticeable effects on the rate at which glaciers are melting, causing glaciers in general to shrink worldwide.[54] Although the meltwater from these glaciers are increasing the total water supply for the present, the disappearance of glaciers in the long term will diminish available water resources. Increased meltwater due to rising global temperatures can also have negative effects such as flooding of lakes and dams and catastrophic results.

I could write a book.

Fiction!!!

Geologist Informs UK Gov On Climate Change "Lies" Global Warming is a FRAUD=UN agenda21.

But then he is only a Geologist, what would he know?

You obviously don't know any science and you have an agenda based on political views. You wouldn't recognize real science if it hit you in the face. There is a reason all legitimate science organizations understand global warming ... if not the recommendations some make due to it's effects.

I have been posting real science on Mingle for years. If you understood any of this topic, you would see how your "geologist" is using a straw man argument to push an agenda... just like you do.

Finding a youtube crackpot is not proof. It just shows you are not serious about learning anything. For whatever other problems NASA has, it's Earth science group has done excellent work.

With all due respect, your posts make you look like a moron.

Their is no global warming, never has been. It is a natural occurance based on the sun's activity and the orbit of the planet. And I would suggest that in recognizing real science you check your premises, they are in error. And the real science organizations, those not in control and bought by the UN, the US or European governments say so. It is only those with an agenda that keep claiming global warming and it is the idiots that haven't a clue that support them.

And political view, my political view is the total termination of politicians and any matter political. I live within nature and support natural laws they say there is not enough CO2 in the atmosphere, my plants need all they can get to grow properly as they are carbon based and must have the carbon. And as a benefit to me, they provide the oxygen I need.

But then there are a whole bunch of political idiots in this world of which a vast percentage have found their way to not only this forum but all the forums around the world. Even that idiot Romney got one thing right, 47% of the population is hopeless. And I say leave them to their own devices and they will receive their just rewards, just keep the fires down at the crematorium going, they will be well fed.

And as to your claim of posting "real" science, it is just that a claim invalidated by the false accusations of Al "I am stupid but the masses are even less endowed" Gore. A science he discovered right after he invented the internet. If you ever want to know the truth, just follow the money. Money that in this case makes CO2 emissions ok so long as you pay a tax, not that there be solutions, just that someone pay some sort of extortion. So I would suggest that before you call someone a crackpot while supporting the real crackpots, that you check your premises, they are in error. And just to make myself perfectly clear, just show one source that is not government (especially US, UN or UK, the idiotic "U(s)" of the world) or government supported NGOs that support the global warming claim.

You can't, because it doesn't exist. In fact the earth has now entered a cooling cycle that will continue for quite some time

And in total disrespect, I would suggest that before you deem someone a moron you should get a grip and face reality as you haven't a clue. A moron is a physical handicap whereas the brain does not work properly. And to degrade their unfortunate situation to some sort of slur demonstrates the highest level of ignorance (the ignoring of facts that are available to be known). But then to assume that someone would take you serious about the false accusations on global warming is just pure asinine.

And oh yes, I typed "global cooling" into google and guess what was at the top of the list: NASA Earth Observatory: Earth is Cooling...No It's Warming.

But here is one for you: OSS Foundation: Global Warming Natural Cycle

And that title is very misleading, but the real issue are all the graphs that show sets of data over time but verbiage that claim an opposite and just why would that be. Nothing to do with their source of funding would it?

Microsoft Forms OSS Foundation Hey don't they also fund common core? Aren't these two of the core agendas of Agenda 21.

So keep spouting crap but don't expect other than the totally uninformed and indoctrinated idiots to follow along.

Yep, without any doubt, you have proved you are a moron. You don't know a single fact about any aspect of the topic. Yet you know the answers and causes to everything. I wonder if you finished high school.

We have had internet trolls here before but ... wow!

We have had internet trolls here before but ... wow!

Back with the old moron stuff again, eh. Glad to know I can get you so upset, makes my day. I enjoy a good chuckle and never take forum characters very seriously. And as I have stated so often, I'm not here to be popular, in fact just the opposite.

Now to refute that rebuttal, wait there isn't any. But you are mistaken, I don't need to know the answers and causes of everything, that would make one an idiot. All I need to know are the questions necessary to find all those answers.

But it does seem that one wonders about many things so how can another take any of those wonders seriously. That is the difference, I don't wonder about anything that I'm not willing to find the answer.

And oh by the way, you offer a source, I do read them. In fact the one that has you so upset I have to track back about 8 levels before the facts started to verify and then it was just a matter of tracking down the funding to determine what it verified and with global warming it keeps coming back to the same issues, either NASA of or other government agency or government funded NGO.

But what is remarkable is Ian Joughin that has been used and cited in many works for his work in physics. He has been tracking and calculating the Greenland glacier since 1998. His work of it's movement into the sea and resultant melting estimating that it would take anywhere for 200 to 500 years to melt and raise the sea level by tens of centimeters. But his area of expertise is:

Synthetic aperture radar interferometry is an imaging technique for measuring the topography of a surface, its changes over time, and other changes in the detailed characteristic of the surface. By exploiting the phase of the coherent radar signal, interferometry has transformed radar remote sensing from a largely interpretive science to a quantitative tool, with applications in cartography, geodesy, land cover characterization, and natural hazards. This paper reviews the techniques of interferometry, systems and limitations, and applications in a rapidly growing area of science and engineering.

But the joke is NASA and the National Science Foundation and their portrayal or should we say misrepresentation of the facts to meet a government agenda.

So blow smoke and I'll show up with a fire extinguisher. Doesn't bother me if you want to call that a troll, I'll accept that.

NASA Spots Worrisome Antarctic Ice Sheet Melt

news.yahoo.com/nasa-spots-worrisome-antarctic-ice-sheet-melt-183822453.html

WASHINGTON (AP) — The huge West Antarctic ice sheet is starting a glacially slow collapse in an unstoppable way, two new studies show. Alarmed scientists say that means even more sea level rise than they figured.

The worrisome outcomes won't be seen soon. Scientists are talking hundreds of years, but over that time the melt that has started could eventually add 4 to 12 feet to current sea levels.

A NASA study looking at 40 years of ground, airplane and satellite data of what researchers call "the weak underbelly of West Antarctica" shows the melt is happening faster than scientists had predicted, crossing a critical threshold that has begun a domino-like process.

"It does seem to be happening quickly," said University of Washington glaciologist Ian Joughin, lead author of one study. "We really are witnessing the beginning stages."

It's likely because of man-made global warming and the ozone hole which have changed the Antarctic winds and warmed the water that eats away at the feet of the ice, researchers said at a NASA news conference Monday.

"The system is in sort of a chain reaction that is unstoppable," said NASA glaciologist Eric Rignot, chief author of the NASA study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. "Every process in this reaction is feeding the next one."

Curbing emissions from fossil fuels to slow climate change will probably not halt the melting but it could slow the speed of the problem, Rignot said.

Rignot, who also is a scientist at the University of California Irvine, and other scientists said the "grounding line" which could be considered a dam that stops glacier retreat has essentially been breached. The only thing that could stop the retreat in this low-altitude region is a mountain or hill and there is none. Another way to think of it is like wine flowing from a horizontal uncorked bottle, he said.

Rignot looked at six glaciers in the region with special concentration on the Thwaites glacier, about the size of New Mexico and Arizona combined. Thwaites is so connected to the other glaciers that it helps trigger loss elsewhere, said Joughin, whose study was released Monday by the journal Science.

Joughin's study uses computer simulations and concludes "the early-stage collapse has begun." Rignot, who used data that showed a speed up of melt since the 1990s, said the word "collapse" may imply too fast a loss, it would be more the start of a slow-motion collapse and "we can't stop it."

Several outside experts in Antarctica praised the work and said they too were worried.

"It's bad news. It's a game changer," said Ted Scambos, lead scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, who wasn't part of either study. "We thought we had a while to wait and see. We've started down a process that we always said was the biggest worry and biggest risk from West Antarctica."

The Rignot study sees eventually 4 feet (1.2 meters) of sea level rise from the melt. But it could trigger neighboring ice sheet loss that could mean a total of 10 to 12 feet of sea level rise, the study in Science said, and Rignot agreed.

The recent reports from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change don't include melt from West Antarctic or Greenland in their projections and this would mean far more sea level rise, said Sridhar Anandakrishnan, professor of geosciences at Pennsylvania State University. That means sea level rise by the year 2100 is likely to be about three feet, he said.

Even while the West Antarctic ice sheet is melting, the much larger East Antarctic ice sheet seems stable because it is cooler, Scambos said.

Climate change studies show Antarctica is a complicated continent in how it reacts. For example, just last month Antarctic sea ice levels — not the ice on the continent — reached a record in how far they extended. That has little or no relation to the larger more crucial ice sheet, Scambos and other scientists say.

NASA, the art of deception or how to take things out of context to mislead and misguide. In 1998, Ian was at the University of Washington, but in a papers in 1999 and 2000, Ian was at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology. And the 1998 paper to which this refers was on the Greenland glacier. The 1999 paper did deal with the Antarctica:

Interferometric RADARSAT data are used to map ice motion in the source areas of four West Antarctic ice streams. The data reveal that tributaries, coincident with subglacial valleys, provide a spatially extensive transition between slow inland flow and rapid ice stream flow and that adjacent ice streams draw from shared source regions. Two tributaries flow into the stagnant ice stream C, creating an extensive region that is thickening at an average rate of 0.49 meters per year. This is one of the largest rates of thickening ever reported in Antarctica.

Wait a minute, what is this thickening thing? Isn't it amazing at how the idiotic masses will believe anything the government tells them without ever checking out the sources or facts. Speaking of facts, the closest most ever get to facts are the politically slanted newspapers owned by the same corporations that own the rest of the mass media, all the news you need to know.

And here is a great presentation that will show the entire global warming hoax is just that a hoax.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jzBWmpzifc

Lord Christopher Monckton can almost be considered a neutral observer in the climate change and global warming debate. He takes a middle ground and says he does believe in global warming, but when you evaluate the statistics correctly, the impact on the environment is so tiny that the entire global warming fiasco is effectively a dupe.

This powerful presentation covers most of the general arguments used by global warming propagandists, and demonstrates the deceptive tactics and outright fraud that they use to steer public opinion on this matter with their fake graphs. Furthermore, he covers the topic from an economic view, and points out that the climate change hoax is nothing more than another tax grab from greedy politicians.

In fact, Lord Christopher Monckton even using the climate change scientists own figures to do some simple math, and shows that with their proposed tax schemes to stop global warming; $450 billion dollars will only reduce the effect of global warming by 1/1000th of a degree Fahrenheit. It is disgraceful and without doubt, maybe the greatest hoax of our lifetime.

Al Gore Explains The Real Motivation Behind Republicans' Climate Change Denial

www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/05/12/al-gore-republicans_n_5313028.html?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592

Despite the release of a White House report detailing the devastating effects of global warming already underway, many Republicans are unwavering in their belief that humans play no role in climate change.

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), for instance, told ABC News on Sunday that he does not "believe that human activity is causing these dramatic changes to our climate the way these scientists are portraying it."

And last month, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) claimed the global warming debate had become "dumbed down," before making claims on historic temperatures that stand in stark contrast to the work of climate scientists.

Former vice president Al Gore says he sees the true motivation behind these remarks: currying favor with Republican megadonors like Charles and David Koch.

Speaking at the University of Chicago's Institute of Politics on Monday, Gore noted that Republicans like John McCain and Mitt Romney had acknowledged and taken steps toward solving the issue before it became politicized by the right.

"I don't think it's particularly complicated why they have all cowed into abandoning that position," Gore said. "They will face primary opponents financed by the Koch Brothers, and others who are part of their group, if they even breathe the slightest breath of sympathy for the truth about climate science. It's not really that complicated."

Gore continued: "And of course, Sen. Paul is from a coal state, but even if he were not, anyone who wants to set his or her aspirations on the Republican nomination for the presidency in 2016 already knows that they can't possibly cross the Koch brothers and the others that are part of that group, the large carbon polluters and ideological anti-statists who are really terrified that the government will do anything new, so as Grover Norquist said famously years ago, they want to shrink the government to where it can be drowned in a bathtub."
