I have a computer I have been cleaning temporary files, registry, defrag both the OS and the registry. And sometimes when I restart it after doing a bunch of cleaning and what not, the antivirus say's it's updating yet it's not connected to the internet nor has been in a while. Any idea why?

Your virus protection has been cloned by a virus......It's been removed and replace by a down loader. A down loader that gets more virus....uninstall it! Hey, get avast 2014 free addition from cnet.com. It will not let a virus install in your system....

The Updater of your Antivirus would still try to update the Application!
Open it and check!
Best thing would be if you uninstalled it though!
Still would be a problem without an AV-App if you introduced a Virus through a Memorystick,CD or External Hard-disk!

'Microsoft security essentials' is a good free one.
Be sure to remove any other anti virus programmes first, before downloading it.

- Any CD's put in the computer was burned on the computer or store bought.
- nothing has changed on the computer internally or hardware speaking.
- It's not that the updater says it's downloading, or updating, it specifically said installing updates.

I've had this happen to my anti-virus programs once or twice. If it's a program that promises "daily updates", I'm pretty sure it's just the program SAYING it's updating to make itself look useful and impressive - but it's probably not been taken over by a virus or malware. Probably. Even if it had been, it would still need the internet to download and update itself, wouldn't it?
Always have (at least) two anti-virus or anti-malware programs installed (or one of each) so that they can check on one another. Even if they say that they're not compatible with other such programs, you can usually ignore that warning.

Download 2 things first.
CCleaner....... Run it.
MalwareBytes...... Run it.

Then update your Internet Security Software. I fly with Kaspersky.

Again......

Download 2 things first.
CCleaner....... Run it.
MalwareBytes...... Run it.

If you cannot download, have someone else put those two on a thumb drive.

Problem solved.
