Obama says mistrust of police corroding America

President Barack Obama speaks at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s 44th Annual Legislative Conference Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington, Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014. Obama told the audience that the mistrust of law enforcement that was exposed after the fatal police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, has a corrosive effect on all of America, not just on black communities.

The widespread mistrust of law enforcement that was exposed by the fatal police shooting of an unarmed black man in Missouri exists in too many other communities and is having a corrosive effect on the nation, particularly on its children, President Barack Obama says. He blames the feeling of wariness on persistent racial disparities in the administration of justice.

Obama said these misgivings only serve to harm communities that are most in need of effective law enforcement. "It makes folks who are victimized by crime and need strong policing reluctant to go to the police because they may not trust them," he said Saturday night in an address at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's annual awards dinner.

"And the worst part of it is it scars the hearts of our children," Obama said, adding that it leads some youngsters to unnecessarily fear people who do not look like them and others to constantly feel under suspicion no matter what they do.
"That is not the society we want," he said. "It's not the society that our children deserve." Obama addressed the Aug. 9 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown carefully but firmly, saying his death and the raw emotion it produced had reawakened the country to the fact that "a gulf of mistrust" exists between residents and police in too many communities.
Obama said government cannot play the primary role in the lives of children but it "can bring folks together" to make a difference for them. Helping girls of color deal with inequality is also important, he said, and part of the continuing mission of the White House Council on Women and Girls. The effort has involved his wife, Michelle, the mother of their 13- and 16-year-old daughters.

Obama noted that black girls are more likely than their white peers to be suspended, jailed and physically harassed, and that black women struggle daily with "biases that perpetuate oppressive standards for how they're supposed to look and how they're supposed to act."

I put mistrust of cops in the same category as mistrust of government or politicians,,,

except cops may be a bit CLOSER to citizens and have easier and more common access to them,, than politicians or other government officials

and cops serve in a more DIRECT and constant manner, a more URGENT and one on one relationship,,,

I think the corrosion in America is more due to distrust of Eric Holder and what he represents in government. Thank God he is leaving.

I don't think most Americans know who Holder is or what he has the authority to do,,,

most Americans do know what cops and politicians and government (in general) are though,,,

then again

there is a long list of things in America that have a 'corrosive effect'

he was just taking on the topic of ONE of them

Maybe THIS is the problem!

I was speaking to a local policeman recently and he was telling me that the "rules of engagement" of how and when to arrest someone were given to them by homeland security.

Why, the Fuhrer will just put someone in there who will bow to the Fuhrer and do his will. You really think it was Holder? Obama pulled the strings.

the president only spoke to one source of mistrust,, and he was not incorrect,,,

People don't trust the police? Wonder why?

It couldn't be because you can get killed now for being homeless and "camping" illegally could it?

That could never happen!

people have been mistrusting cops since the inception ,,,,but its in more communities now and its more publicized

I wouldn't say its clear whether that is because there is more corruption, or same corruption with more coverage

but its a part of the whole, a part I like to think of as a small part,,but important to address for the sake of those on the receiving end of it,,,

yeah... see they don't want any body talkin... you were right....

noticed the little prep thread disappeared... someone does not like any one talking about this...

now on the lighter side... you all need to have a nice talk with your local police and sheriffs dept. ask them why they had to sit through all those FBI indoctrination meetings... tell them the crap that has happened to you personally... it will match up to what is going on
with them....

the "joker tut" is just that... a joker

the media controlled pap "faux", fake... is just what it is... we need a soft landing not a full blown third world upset..

have been contacted by an ex local police chief.. all he does is pray all the time..cant tell it all... but the feds are on road trips to indoctrinate every body... he is very close to the source... he's still in enforcement...

I always have dialogue with every officer I meet... you will find out If you do this and keep your cool you will have some influence...

I trust my local law enforcement community even though I have thought that maybe a rogue element was trying to shut me up. scared the crap out of me many times... its edgy... you have to try...

the good guys are not our enemy .... we are not their enemy... this joker tut' stuff is a ruse !!! reach out and find out... don't be scared...even though Im tellin you they have scared me and... you wake up the next day and you do it again.... believe me there are elements out there that dont like my business either ... I get it

ps... if you want the dealership info I will send it or post it... it all disapeared...

I said more, not most. Obama is the worst by far but the topic, as I saw it, was law enforcement. When the top law enforcement agent (Holder) is corrupt, the fish rots from the head down.

honest and dishonest people have been going on since time began,,,not only 'since the Clintons'

and judging what is 'most corrupt' is too subjective to even debate

I think holder is far from most corrupt,,nor do I believe he has his hand in 'everything

Why is the President giving his opinion on the shooting in a Ferguson. Isn't there a grand jury hearing it now. He is wrong to condemn either party at this time. No wonder the country is divided.
