The Washington Post has published an opinion piece titled "Can millennials call Arlington home?"

Here is how it begins:

In 1976, while she was a young photojournalist at Newsweek, my mom bought a house. Against the advice of her colleagues from Maryland, she settled in central Arlington. The price at closing: $79,000. Almost 40 years later, I work in Arlington. I'd like to follow in her footsteps, but I'm not certain I can. That's bad for millennials and worse for Arlington.

The author claims that it is bad for Arlington that the author can't afford to live there right now.
Can anyone justify this mentality?

well , I figure, more residents , more taxes, more revenue,,,,,

she is being paid from within that location but she doesn't get to participate in putting the money back in,,,,

I haven't read the article, I would expect there to be more of an explanation in that article,, but the above is my best guess.

I would take it as a commentary on how inflated home prices are. that is sad that young people cannot confidently buy homes these days

Hey, the Fed has printed more money so that people that can't afford homes can buy them. She needs to get on the bubble.

The author of the opinion piece could live elsewhere, but he wants to live in Arlington.
He acts as if he is entitled to live in Arlington.

When his mother bought her house in Arlington in 1976,
that city wasn't as attractive as it is now, according to residents who commented on the WaPo op-ed.

The author could move to a less-attractive community and work to improve it,
just as older generations worked to improve Arlington.

Im not understanding what is wrong with wishing to live where you work?

I think the op did an adequate job of making their points. Keeping people priced out can cause a loss of culture and innovation too.

So, the people who can afford to live in Arlington don't have culture and innovation?

not as innovative as 'new blood'

people get 'set' in their ways and things stop growing and changing and evolving,,,
