Ableton is alright, but I am a ProTools user for a couple of decades. It's really nice to take your home recordings to a pro studio and have all your tracks load easily and effortlessly for final tweaking. It's very nice for sound tracking video.

I really like Garage Band, for its simplicity and ease of use. Plus, I can use it on my iPhone or iPad while I'm out doing something else, bring it home and continue on my iMac.

My advice is to learn technique, tools will come and go. Workflow will change with each new release and technology boost. Your technique will remain somewhat constant, improving as you gain more skills. I started with a 2 track reel to reel, a razor and tape. I now have terabytes of data and can do 128 realtime tracks without lag.

Mastery of microphone placement and choosing the right microphone type will improve your sound dramatically.

what did you mean by learning the technique??I've been using live for 6 months now and still can't make a decent track .....I get stuck after a melody or the bass patch......can't use garage band coz don't have an os...
