If it was, I'd have no problem recovering from one. I think it's more to do with mentality. The pain you feel, is the bittersweet memories. One day, you won't be feeling the heartache anymore. It does take a while though. It can feel draining, when putting on a happy face.

The phrase "broken heart" is "only" a metaphor.

The thing to recognize, is that all metaphors are created in order to express real thoughts and feelings.

The fact that most "broken hearts" do not have physical fractures in them, in no way changes how awful and life changing an experience it is for most people.

In fact, most people who hear that someone WASN'T changed much by having their "heart broken," would respond immediately by saying "well, then their heart WASN'T broken."

Moral of the situation:

Be VERY careful how you apply the word "only."

Several have answered this, but I am going to give my 2 cents worth.

IMO, the term broken heart is NOT simply a metaphor. When you have lost someone who was truly IN your heart and soul, you have lost part of your heart (or that part is now broken). It cannot be mended.
Mind you, I am not talking about simply someone who you liked/dated and you liked but they didn't return the favor. I am talking about TRUE LOVE/SOUL MATES.
YES, one can die from a broken heart (whatever you want to call it) when you have lost that kind of love. As others have said, it IS because the brain and the heart actually work together and have a physical effect on our bodies.
I have lived thru this kind of broken heart, but it wasn't easy....and never, never, never will that part of my heart EVER be mended.
