Similar to a pulley, you hang a 12kg weight on one end of the cord, and as it slowly lowers to the ground it produces enough energy for 20-30 minutes of light. The lamp was invented to offset the need for kerosene, which is the primary source of lamp-light in places without electricity. In addition to the cost of kerosene (often 30% of a family's income), burning it is a fire risk and breathing it can cause a huge number of health risks, including breathing difficulty, vision loss and seizures. It is estimated that every day 780 million women and children breathe kerosene fumes equal to the smoke of 40 cigarettes. The GravityLight team is currently crowdfunding to enhance the light for its second generation model, allowing it to shine brighter and last longer. The machine is built, locally, in the places that need them and costs around $10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QX32yQgybaw |
