U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah Sr., Of Philadelphia, Indicted On Corruption Charges

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah Sr., the Democrat who represents a district that includes parts of Philadelphia, was indicted on Wednesday over allegations of political corruption.

According to the indictment, the government alleges that Fattah was involved in a wide-ranging conspiracy that included bribery, the illegal use of campaign contributions and theft of charitable funds.

"Public corruption by our elected officials and their associates undermines the American public's confidence in our government," Special Agent in Charge Akeia Conner of the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Philadelphia Field Office said in a press release. "When our elected officials and their associates violate the law and create sophisticated financial schemes to enrich themselves, the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation, will work diligently with our fellow law enforcement partners to restore the public's trust."

Fattah denied the allegations, saying in a statement that "this has been an eight-year effort by some in the Department of Justice to link my public service career to some form of wrongdoing. ... As I have previously stated, I have never participated in any illegal activity or misappropriation of taxpayer dollars as an elected official."

The charges against Fattah and four other associates stem from Fattah's failed 2007 campaign for mayor of Philadelphia. According to the indictment, Fattah and his associates allegedly borrowed $1 million from a wealthy supporter. When he lost, they allegedly returned the unused $400,000 and then arranged for a nonprofit that they controlled to pay out the remaining $600,000.

That charity, the Educational Advancement Alliance, which was supposed to give at-risk students a better chance at a higher education, received federal grants. To conceal that payment, the indictment alleges that Fattah and others created sham contracts, falsified accounting records, tax returns and finance disclosure statements.

In addition, the indictment alleges Fattah also looked to pay back supporters by offering federal grants and that he also misappropriated campaign funds to repay his son's student debt to the tune of $23,000.

Pennsylvania congressman convicted in racketeering case

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2016/06/21/pennsylvania-congressman-convicted-in-racketeering-case.html/

A veteran Pennsylvania congressman was convicted Tuesday in a racketeering case that largely centered on various efforts to repay an illegal $1 million campaign loan.

U.S. Rep. Chaka Fattah was found guilty of all counts against him, including racketeering, fraud and money laundering. His lawyers had argued that the schemes were engineered without Fattah's knowledge by two political consultants who pleaded guilty in the case.

The 59-year-old Democrat had been in Congress since 1995 and served on the powerful House Appropriations Committee. But he lost the April primary and his bid for his 12th term. His current term ends in December.

Fattah had little reaction to the verdict, but he kept a smile on his face as he conferred with his lawyers afterward.

He will remain free on bail. A judge set sentencing for Oct. 4.

Prosecutors said Fattah routed federal grant money and nonprofit funds through his consultants to pay back the illegal loan.

Justice Department lawyer Jonathan Kravis said in his closing argument that Fattah also used federal grants and nonprofit funds to enrich his family and friends.

Defense lawyers acknowledged Fattah might have gotten himself in financial trouble after a costly 2007 mayoral bid, but they said any help from friends amounted to gifts, not bribes.

Many of them came from co-defendant Herbert Vederman, a wealthy friend who had dreams of scoring an ambassadorship. U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, a Democrat, testified that he never took the pitch from Fattah too seriously, even though Fattah once bent the president's ear about it. Democrat Ed Rendell, a former mayor and governor, was called to defend Vederman, his former deputy mayor. He said Vederman was qualified for the job and accused prosecutors of cynically misreading the help he lent Fattah.

Vederman helped support Fattah's South African nanny and paid $18,000 for a Porsche owned by Fattah's TV anchor wife.

"The nanny, the Porsche and the Poconos, they weren't part of a bribery scheme," Fattah lawyer Samuel Silver argued in closings. "Those were all overreaches by the prosecution."

The campaign loan was just one of several schemes prosecutors outlined during the trial. They say Fattah was aided in his endeavors by current and former staffers who ran his district office or the nonprofits; by Vederman, who now lives in Palm Beach, Florida; and by political consultants Greg Naylor and Thomas Lindenfeld, who pleaded guilty.

The other co-defendants are Bonnie Bowser, of Philadelphia, who ran his district office; Karen Nicholas, of Williamstown, New Jersey, who ran the education nonprofit Fattah started; and Robert Brand, of Philadelphia, a businessman married to a former Fattah staffer. The jury on Tuesday came back with a mixed verdict for them.

He still gets paid as a sitting Rep, even though as a convicted felon he can't vote. Will there be outrage from Obama and Democrat leadership for him not doing his job, one of their critical talking points about Republicans?
Well at least he'll be able to do another one of jobs as an elected Democrat, he will still be a "super delegate" at the Dems convention.

Most of our representatives should be in jail actually. But when you are the body that makes the laws it can be hard to file or get charges against them

Corruption Conviction of Clinton Crony Foreshadows Hillary Legal Struggles

Congressman who backed Hillary guilty of 22 counts of corruption

Hillary Clinton superdelegate and longtime Democratic Congressman Chaka Fattah was convicted of 22 counts of corruption charges. After serving 11 terms in Congress, Fattah is now out on bail after an indictment was filed in July 2015 against him and four associates. Despite the conviction, Fattah is set to serve the remainder of his term in Congress until January 2017. He faces sentencing in October, and could potentially serve the rest of his life in prison.

Fattah formally endorsed Hillary Clinton for president in February, shortly before losing his primary bid for re-election in April. He has been a Clinton loyalist for decades, standing by the Clintons amid the Monica Lewinsky scandal in the 1990s, and even helping Bill Clinton coordinate DNC fundraising trips to Philadelphia shortly after he admitted to perjury. “He can be a public servant without being perfect,” Fattah told Philly.com in 1998.

Fattah isn’t the first Clinton superdelegate to be convicted under corruption charges.....

Yeah, but as usual, that doesn't mean what the Clinton haters want it to mean.

trump has had the KKK support him too, but that doesn't mean there's anything KKK-ish about Trump.

My Constitution says even the KKK has a right to an opinion and its members a right to vote a candidate of their choice.

It does not however give a Senator the right to be corrupt.

The fact that he will be allowed to serve out his term with pay and as a representative I am most definitely opposed to!

His support of Clinton is irrelevant as to his rights, but the article states he is only one of many who support Clinton, are dems, and have been charged in corruption cases.

The right is not any better. Maybe caught less. They're all crooks in my eyes taking tax payer $$$, profiting from their time in office, voting raises, medical, and retirement plans for themselves and giving nothing in return.

Remember not so long ago, when the media went wild after Donald Trump because he didn’t immediately condemn an alleged endorsement from former Grand Wizard of the KKK David Duke?

It later turned out that Duke never even endorsed Trump – something Duke went out of his way to make public.

I guess the rumor alone was good enough for liberals in the media.

Fast forward to today, when a California branch of the KKK has raised at least $20,000 for the campaign of another presidential candidate. The media isn’t covering it. Why? Because it’s not Trump, or Ted Cruz, or John Kasich the Klan is supporting … It’s Hillary Clinton!

Via AOL News:

A prominent Ku Klux Klan leader says that the group has raised thousands of dollars for Hillary Clinton’s campaign and that the Klan is officially endorsing the Democratic frontrunner for president—a claim the Clinton campaign vigorously denies.

Shortly after setting a giant cross on fire with dozens of other members of various white nationalist groups in Georgia on Saturday, Will Quigg, a Grand Dragon in a California branch of the KKK, sat down with Vocativ—which was there for a larger reporting trip about the modern state of the hate group—to talk about the 2016 election. According to Quigg, “For the KKK, Clinton is our choice.”

“She is friends with the Klan,” Quigg said. “A lot of people don’t realize that. She’s friends with Senator [Robert] Byrd. He’s been an Exulted Cyclops in the Klan. He’s been King Kleagle.” (King Kleagle is another KKK title for the leader of an entire “realm,” or state. Quigg is the King Kleagle for California.) Robert Byrd is a former U.S. senator from West Virginia. In the 1940s, Byrd organized and served as the leader of a Klan chapter in West Virginia. Byrd has long since disavowed the Klan and called his involvement “wrong.” In 2010, Hillary Clinton called Senator Byrd a “friend and mentor.”

Where is the wall-to-wall media coverage? Where are the disavowals? Denying the KKK is raising money for you is all well and good but two things: 1) It doesn’t mean they’re not raising it on your behalf without your knowledge, which is still unacceptable and 2) Clinton hasn’t exactly had a stranglehold on the concept of truth over the years.

This Quigg fellow announced his support of Hillary Clinton months ago, saying he likes her because of her “hidden agenda.”

The media barely mentioned it at the time, with the exception of taking the opportunity to speculate Quigg’s endorsement was actually meant to hurt Hillary and hide the possibility that he was still secretly a Trump supporter.

With tens of thousands of dollars now heading to the Hillary campaign, that theory seems to have gone out the window.
