After fighting with Win7 and 10 for three days. I have gone to Ubuntu for a try. So far, I like it. I think getting used to it is all that is required now. Is there a need for virus and malware protection using Linux based OS?

my understanding is that while linux isn't plagued like windows you should still run something

I've never once had any viruses or malware on any linux box, ever in nearly 20 years of using linux. I'm currently using ubuntu, security updates are generally given very quickly after the problems are discovered - much faster than windows or mac os.
