I spent one Christmas day by myself
I hated and swore that my home was open to anyone and everyone.

That was 25 years ago
We have had many come and enjoy.

I think about this sometimes..how Christmas has changed over the years

as a kid I could not wait for Santa to visit and every year we went to see my grandparents. Both sets happen to live on the same street in a very small northern town. THe houses were not big by today's standard but filled to brim with aunts, uncles, cousins, packages and bows and goodies all over the place. Some of my very fondest memories were of those years of going up north.

then later on when I first got married we tried doing the juggling act: your parents or mine and what about the grandparents..and will we ever just get to wake up on Christmas morning in our own house and watch our own kids open presents?? The travel, the packing, baking and taking things with ya. whoowwee..did that one for a whole lot of years while my boys were growing up.

then as the kids got older, we stayed home more but..had a husband who was usually gone at that time of year for his job so the kids and I got really good and just spending it together. We lived next to state land and just down the road was a place to cut your own tree so the boys and I would go get a great big one and haul it home and into the living room. We would have a Christmas movie marathon and watch them for days. Each day I would do some baking and the boys would come down and snitch a few cookies
" just testing these for ya ma" happy

as my oldest began dating my now daughter in law I learned how to be flexible on which day we celebrate it and I am open now to it being before or after Christmas and does not have to be on Christmas day

What is a curtain climber?
You do have Mingle family too you know :)

Thanks all.

Amazingly, my search engine failed to provide a definition for 'curtain climber', so I'll give it a try:

'curtain climber' - noun - An independently-mobile human being of preschool age. (See also 'ankle biter', 'yard ape', 'toddler', etc.)

I PLAN TO STAY HOME ALONE RATHER THAN DEALING WITH a certain family members drama. Besides, after losing my mom, it just isn't the same.sad2

Yea the idea that Christmas is a season and not a day does seem to lower the stress level.

I now look forward to Christmas morning as the that delicious quiet moment where the gifts are long tucked the various places they need to be and I have a nice little burst of delighted phone calls over a latte when I have been able to sleep late. And when I feel like it I can go visit and enjoy someone else doing all the back breaking work.

For the ones that are alone for Christmas how do we solve that problem so they are not.

How do you reach the ones that live to far from you that can't come for Christmas?

I wish I had an answer.
It's not a day to be alone.

Sometimes I think it is just easier that I work Christmas most years. Takes some of the concern out of what to do for the holidays.

I have in the past tried to get the family together to celebrate but it has gotten more difficult as the family has spread and moved away from each other.

Although I would like to think I am a lot like Annie and would welcome anyone so they were not alone this time of year. Gotta love Annie and her spirit!

No kids here, & this is the first Christmas without the wife... Feels really weird after all that time together... ohwell

I do have my sister's place to go to, she & her husband are good people, & she's got a "curtain-climber" that EVERYONE loves, so I won't be alone (strictly speaking). Guess I'll just have to adapt to this in much the same way as I have when people have passed on & aren't there any more... indifferent

Curtain climber= a toddler that usually loves to hang onto anything for support to scoot around in a baby circle or just taking the first steps. Notorious or famous for hiding or playing in the curtains and coats and sometimes pulling down the Christmas tree getting tangled up in the skirt or light strands or even the table linens and mortifying their parents to grandmas delight. A normal healthy inquisitive child of tender years.

If you have graduated to being in the old cat lady crowd sometimes it is becoming to be known as a paniced cat or new kitten someone thought we needed so we could chose between our pet's vet bills and our endless trips to the doctor. Usually a highly favored, slight spoiled, pet. Sometimes chased by it's human counter part.

I'm alone all day today and tomorrow. It's been that way for the last 3 years. I'm kind of used to it. Just eating some cookies I made for myself.
