INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Bernie Sanders won the Indiana Democratic primary against fellow Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, according to the Associated Press.

Sanders took to social media to thank Indiana for the win.

The results may surprise some, because recent polls showed Clinton leading in the state.

Both Clinton and Sanders’ camps have been campaigning in the Hoosier state for several weeks, leading up to the primary.

Clinton only attended a few events in Indiana this election season, including stops in northern Indiana and one in Indianapolis. Some believe the former secretary of state’s decision to only visit a few times, may have indicated a confidence in winning the state.

Clinton’s husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter Chelsea also attended a few Indiana events over the past couple weeks.

Sanders visited more events across the state than his opponent, including major colleges like Indiana University and Purdue University.

Sanders drew thousands of people to his last Indiana event Monday. He stuck to his main talking points, speaking to his downtown crowd about income inequality and likening his opponent, Hillary Clinton, to a Wall Street insider.
