I was a t my grandmothers house today and she saw one of her neighbors across the street doing yard work. And she laughed and said "there's (her name) haha stupid nig*er" Now my grandmother and this woman get along fine so why would she make a statement like that ?

I told my dad and he defended her saying she comes from a different time in history when that was acceptable. I said well it's hate filled he said no I don't understand. He said it's not hate filled and that I don't understand. Am I missing something ?

Anyone outside of a black person using the N word is being a bigot, yea.

Black folks use the word in a different form and the meaning is different. Of course there are black folks who do not like the word and do not use it. But white racists gave them the word and they will reconcile it how they choose.

Generationally speaking, our older generations were told and taught that this was acceptable. It is not.

Something that is important to realize, is that racists ( or any of the other "ists" for that matter), are not at all UNCOMFORTABLE about being illogical and ignorant. They are, within themselves, entirely happy and at peace with their attitudes, and feel completely fine, so long as the rest of the world supports their mental defects. In other words, you can't tell whether someone is racist or not, based on how they comport themselves towards others.

It is also true, that if someone inherited (through social upbringing) a raceism-based set of reference names and social structures, even if they are not directly racist themselves, they will tend to behave as though they ARE racist.

When I was a kid growing up in Virginia, for example, I remember that the first sorting/team choosing rhyme we learned to chant as we separated any group of children into teams, went

"Eany, meany, miney, moe. Catch a [N-] by the toe; if he hollars, let him go, Eany meany, miney, moe."

I myself, said it all the time, and I had no idea what N- even meant. I thought we were talking about some sort of relative of the lion or tiger family.

Until my father inexplicably burst into a fury hearing me say it, of course. I was only about five, so all I knew was that apparently, these relatives of the tiger family didn't take well to being referred to by that word. I was afraid to ask what word I should use instead.

Yup me too. In California, we had family members that ran with Cezar Chavez during the migrant workers and black rights movement during the early 70's. The word was not even breathed.

It seems to me that context is needed to know if it represents racism. It’s a sign of ignorance in my opinion.

so,, it may be racist or it may not, ,depending upon the context

if it ends in an "a", it's not the same as it is if it ends with an "er"...

I was born & raised in africa, amongst niggaz & had some great Friends & life experiences along the way but the fact is i'm a G & niggaz have no problem without me in anyway i address them & i can walk into any scene in the world packed with niggaz & have no problem whatsoever. If you refer to any English (UK) Dictionary, the word is defined as a Derogatory name for a negro, or member of any dark skinned race. To my knowledge,its meaning has never changed here in the UK.

I only lived in the uk a year,, I heard the word used amongst poor youth in non derogatory manner with each other


but they probably aren't following dictionary etiquette,,,,

it's plain and simple it's a bad word regardless of text. it's offensive even to read and hear the word. it's the devil working in the head and on the tongue.
