text messaging program makes it possible to send free text messages giving thanks to American soldiers until midnight, PT, on Thanksgiving Day. (www.americasupportsyou.mil)From World News with Charles Gibson By BILL WEIR
Nov. 21, 2007

Share When Shauna Fleming was 15 years old, she set out to convince Americans to write thank-you notes to overseas troops. So she founded amillionthanks.org, with a goal to send 1 million letters to the troops.

Getting Home for the HolidaysFleming met that goal within six months of starting the project, through fairs, air shows and NASCAR races. Four million letters later, the Pentagon took notice.

Now Fleming is a college freshman whom the Department of Defense has drafted to move her gratitude-gathering efforts into the digital age by using her organization to support the effort to text troops over the holiday.

"When they came to me and had this new novel idea ... to send text messages," Fleming said, "I thought it was great because it's something that's immediate."

((((I support our troops regularly)))) on this site. Just join and they send you mail, and you can send thanks and mail as well. Then read what they say as well. "America Supports You."

(((((Major cell phone carriers have agreed to send the messages for free.))))) People can send a text message of thanks to (((8-9-2-7-9, until midnight, PT, on Thanksgiving Day.)))) The messages end up on a Web site, where troops with Web access around the world can log on to read the sentiments and respond.

"Thank you for keeping us safe," one text message from Maryland reads.

At just more than 62,000 text messages sent so far, the program has a way to go to reach that million-message goal. But it's doable, considering that quick texting is this generation's communiqué of choice.

"I thought it was a really easy way just to be able to ... send a text message of thanks," said student Maria Sanchez. "I mean, as college students, we don't exactly have all the time in the world to sit and write a card."

And it is Fleming's mission to engage her peers in a war that is out of sight ... and often out of mind.

"A lot of them may not get support from their friends and family. They may not get care packages, and so, you have some soldiers ... who are sitting there who get absolutely nothing," Fleming said. "This is something that will connect them with home ... where complete strangers will say 'Happy Thanksgiving, Happy holidays. We're thinking about you.'"

This is the fifth Thanksgiving since the invasion of Iraq. Fleming believes a million thanks is the least we can do.

Soooo easy. And IT'S FREE!!!! We have until midnight tomorrow to do this.
I saw the troops on tv commenting on the messages they get via these text messages. They are greatful and love the acknowledgement from home.

I sent my boys....Niece, nephews, sister. No. That isn't enough.
These young people and older ones too, need to hear positive from us. A simple Happy Thanksgiving would be nice.
Also some of these soldiers have no one to send them mail.
It is called kindness fanta. Concern. Showing support for those that defend what you adamatly profess.

They do not fight for me in Iraq.
They fight Bushes private war!

Nonetheless they are fine patriotic men,
and women that do their duty!
They are my brothers and the best way
I can serve them now
is to demand that they be brought home!!

Being Naieve and blinded by a bleeding heart
helps no one and solves nothing!!

I have no clue what has happened to you fanta...but you have changed. You are an angry young man.
It is not a bleeding heart that cares for and thinks of someone other than themselves.
This thread is for info to those that would like to put their money where their mouth is.
Give thanks and support and a simple happy Thanksgiving to those that represent you.
If you have a problem with this thread; stay out of it.
Please keep your discontent and angry attitude somewhere else.
I would have never thought you to be in here bashing a thoughtful and loving incentive towards our troops.
Have a good day fanta.flowerforyou

Oh.... and just so you know fanta. I do not just sit here on my ass and do nothing to demand our troops be brought home. I am active in marches and protests and also send mail and e mail and phone calls to those that can make a difference. Those that make the calls in our government. I am very active. I would be interested to see what you do besides ***** on here.
My work goes beyond these threads.
