Russia boosts navy presence in Atlantic, Med

Russia has announced it is to send its navy into the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea as part of a drive to boost its military presence around the world.

Russian Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov says Russia wants to ensure a naval presence.

"The aim of the sorties is to ensure a naval presence in tactically important regions of the world ocean," he said.

Taking part in the exercises will be four battleships and seven other ships as well as 47 planes and 10 helicopters

Buoyed by huge oil revenues, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been boosting military spending while at the same time using diplomacy to broaden Moscow's influence.

In August, Mr Putin ordered the resumption of long-range patrols by Russian bomber aircraft, which were suspended after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990.

But analysts say the navy, once the focus of national pride and symbol of the Soviet Union's military might, is still reeling from more than a decade of under-funding.

A series of accidents, such as the sinking of the Kursk nuclear submarine in 2000, have hammered the Russian navy's reputation at home and abroad.

Russia has long been talking about reviving a permanent naval base in the Mediterranean. During the Cold War, the Soviet navy had a permanent presence on the Mediterranean, using the Syrian port of Tartus as a supply point.

Russia has ever single right to defend them selfs. When united states and Nato launched aggression and forces to the border. United states and Nato was foolish and decided to try and take advantage of what they assumed was a crushed bear. But the Russian bear does not like being poke. Now russia oil companies are very powerful taking control of ever last drop of oil on earth. Massive spending on everything they could buy from mines and railroads in Africa and south America. Too banks and shipping cooperations in Europe.

I used to watch that Bear every now and then thru binoculars, for hours. They had a lot of weapons....Of course they also had East Germany then.

They said we were outnumbered 12-1!! Our plans always seemed to revolve around an organized retreat and delaying action, designed to allow us to survive for 90 days when the US could send re-enforcements.(100,000's)

Yeah, they had a lot of weapons, and so did we!!

I read that the cold war never was cold, that the big guys were always pulling little tricks on each other, one might knock off a sub or an oil rig or a ship or a plane or what ever and then they would laugh about it in their offices, and then return the favor on another occasion and both sides would even laugh about it, I guess it was just like a game to them. Even the challenger shuttle was supposed to be included in that game, and other shuttles as well. I guess that is one of the reasons we have not attacked Iran yet, it seems that we might be fresh out of spy sattelites, to guide the cruise missles because ,I heard that Russia or even on occasion maybe even China likes to shoot them down for target practice. Why do you suppose those 6 nuclear things were put on an airplane in North Dakota ,I think it was a month or so ago? And ended up in Louisiana or somewhere. Could it be they were intended for Iran, to be delivered by plane, since I hear that cruise missles need sattelites to guide them, but somebody spilled the beans and told on them on the internet before it was to take place , so ,I figure likely Russia and Iran and others were already waiting for them in advance. Sounds like the BIG BOYS are failing fast in this country with their dirty plans. By the way, now I hear that one of those 6 warheads are missing now. Do you suppose it could end up on a city near you, maybe another 911? Good Question, I wish I could give you the answer? I think the cold(hot) (secret War) is still going on ?
