My little girl is about half way potty trained. She goes on the potty when she feels like it, but if she's playing or doesn't want to go, she just goes in her pull up. How did you potty train your children?

How did you potty train your children? When my child did that, I took my child to the store and we bought their favorite stickers. I had a big sheet of paper taped to the door. Every time that my child used the potty, they were allowed to put a pretty sticker onto the paper on the door. I made a big deal about it. There's not much else that you can do. They all develop at different times. The most important thing is to never punish them or make them feel bad for not doing it right. She'll eventually get it right.

i started training when my daughter was about 2. took her with me and let her pick out a potty chair. showed her the pretty panties she would get to wear. we made up a potty song. tried rewards and bribes. she didnt have any interest in it. i was so worried. i kept telling myself that she wasnt going to go to college in diapers. she was 3 and a half before she finally took an interest. then in less than 2 weeks, she trained herself. havent had a problem since. she had to want to learn.

We tried at 18 months to potty train my son, but he wasn't into it and had multiple issues. At about age 2 he asked where his potty chair was and since then we have never had a problem. Now I have to deal with a teeneager though.

An important part of reinforcement is "catching" them in the morning first things and then praise. Try to make sure you take her to the potty regularly, perhaps every hour or so. If you notice a pattern over a number of days when she potties in her pullup make note of those time and take her before that time.

I reinforced my daughter with "good things" when she had her pull ups, but then i got pissed cause she was still saying she had to go to the bathroom after the fact. So the only thing i did is make her were underwear and told her that she is a big girl now and it worked to my surprise.

i waited until the summer months and left mine to walk around nude (needless to say, we stayed home for a couple of weeks!).
they didn't like the feeling of pee running down their legs and it wasn't more than 1 or 2 accidents before they realized what they should be doing. |

I used treats to potty train mine. Dependin on what the child liked as to what treat I used. For a couple it was gummy worms, for another couple it was M&M's. When they went peepee they got one, if they pooped they got 2. That was the only time they got these particular treats. And they got tons of praise! We'd dance in the bathroom when they went. I also got a child's storybook about potty trainin an read it to them often. You also have to 'catch' them when they first wake up in the mornin or from a nap, after eattin or drinkin an before bed. You just have to find what works best for yours. Some children are ready before others. And you've got to expect accidents. The worse thing you can do is ridicule or yell at your child for havin an accident. Also remember big changes durin potty trainin can cause regression. Such as movin, changin day care, or a death in the family. My ex left for Desert Storm right after potty trainin my oldest. She regressed for quite sometime.

my youngest, on her second birthday ...
ripped off her diaper and stated "I am done with these".....and she was!!! The second, we let her roam the house bottomless...she knew not to pee on the floor...so she didn't...but one time she came to me in the kitchen and said..."I have to poop." I said "good, go ahead"....thinking she would go to the potty....but no...she squatted and let out a little nugget on the kitchen floor......!!!!! Then the dog ran up and cleaned it up......we still laugh about that....10 years later...... but for the most part the bottomless thing worked!!!!! |

Potty training is directly related to the developemental markers a child has passed. A good clue is if they have stopped running on their tip toes. Usually means they have the muscle control to have the sensation they need to go to the toilet before it actually begins.
Then with minimal rewards a child will respond to that feeling and potty training is pretty easy. Helps also if they associate that diapering means going to the bathroom or at least away from others breifly to a changeing table to return to what they were doing. Then potty training does not become a power play or rude interruption they dislike. |

How did you potty train your children? i didnt use pull ups, they felt too much like nappies, and if they do have an accident in undies they can feel the wetness more and its uncomfortable, so after a few incidents, they relise that its better going to the potty. thats what helped with my little one, but she also had to be ready, she basically told me, i let her come in when i went to the toilet so she knew thats what big girls did, and the first time she did wees on the toilet i made a huge fuss, and she got a lollie, and for the next 5times i did this, but than she was fine going, and washing her hands after.. |

A friend had given us a book called 'Max's Potty"
Just a silly book about using the potty. And lots of reinforcement for using it. We had a little song we sang.
Both my girls hated pull ups.

There are soooo many different ways
*have her wear nothing but socks around the house and when she goes potty it makes the socks wet they dont like the feeling. *set a timer to remind you to tell her its "Potty Time" and make it happy, sing a made up potty time tune. *if she goes in her pull up or undies have her stop doing what she was doing for about 10-15 min. and be sure to tell her she needs to go to the bathroom. *put her in some big girl undies and if they have a character on them say you are a big girl just like ----(whoever is on the undies) and say not to go potty on her or you cant wear them or something of that nature. *EVERY time she goes potty on the potty make a big big big deal about it.Dance around and praise her, give her a treat (sucker, sticker...)if its just #2 she has a problem with just do treats for when she does that. *If there are other siblings when they go to the potty they get like one M&M to show if you use the potty you can have one too. *Use the time you need to go to the restroom as a time for her to go as well. |

I had boys and put cheerios in the toilet and had them aim for the center...
they got hugs, applause, treats..it became a game. Once the peeing part got fun, they wanted to sit and poo on the cheerios... Then the older boy helped with the younger ones. Thinking back all those years..it was quite fun! |

dont get discouraged!! i have a 4 yr old boy and year and a half yr old daughter & i work at a daycare where we help potty trianing kids..
what i did with my son is get him underwear with his favorite character on it which was spongebob..and i explained that spongebob doesnt like his ca-ca on him so we have to make sure you only go on the potty and not on spongebob, and when he went on the potty it was spongebobs potty break too...we also used a sticker chart.. also at my daycare we take the kids who are potty training every hour to the potty..there is this 2 and a half yr old boy who we are potty training and we tell him that hes pee-peeing on the sharks and the fishies and he thinks its hysterical and looks forward to the potty breaks.. keep in mind accidents are bound to happen..do not punish for accidents because that discourages the kid and fills them with fear..this is a major event for kids and they should feel like big kids..reards are always good too..even when they dont go when you put them on a potty..rewards for trying encourages the success!:) keep up the good work and before you know it you will wish she was in diapers again lol! good luck! |
