Topic: Would anyone be interested in this?

I have been coming across some great material over the past several months regarding ADD/ADHD including how it affects relationships. Given the number of people on Mingle whom I know to have disorders like ADD, Autism, and Bipolar, I was wondering if enough people would be interested in a thread created to heighten awareness and understanding of such disorders?
I know it seems odd that I should ask first, but this might be the kind of thread that would flame out fast only to be buried amongst newer threads. That would be a shame. It's the kind of subject I would not want to see "lost in the crowd" and forgotten about. It could make such a big difference for so many of us, not just the people with the disorders but also those of us who don't fully understand them and are not emotionally ready to be with someone who does have one. It could avoid a lot of aggravation and frustration on both sides as we all search for someone special in our lives. So, who is interested? Are we willing to keep such a topic out of the abyss of lost threads?

So far, a fair amount of views, but only one vote of interest...
I don't want to see the effort wasted. That would only bring frustration I don't need, especially since this is about helping others become informed. Hence, the poll. I can't force people to become more informed, but I can gauge interest to see if it's worthwhile. Just like other interested Minglers, I would have to invest a fair amount of time to make sure the thread remains active. It's not worth doing if all I'm going to do is post "bump" or have the thread hijacked. |

I would be very interested in learning more about ADD/ADHD and even adding manic depression to the thread.

Since this is a free site, as the number of threads and members grow, the demand for more storage also grows. That increases the cost of maintaining Mingle.
Keeping a subject alive in a single thread would cut down on duplicate posts, lessening storage demands. So far this thread has been viewed 140 times....but only two people have expressed interest. The impression I get from this is that understanding behavioral disorders is not a high enough priority for most people....which is sad. Rule of thumb here is that no response is a response....in the negative. |

If you want to write about the topic and give people information that you feel will help them, go for it. Getting annoyed that people are not showing enough interest in it is not going to gain more interest, though. So do it if you want to. Those who are interested will comment and contribute.

i think people that have add are not brainwashed by the media
so it has to be some kind of disorder it seems were on two different levels normal people let other people do the thinking for them it often seems people have no idea what im talking about i used to think there was something wrong with me but now i know that the normal people are brainwashed it makes more sense now but its very disturbing there is a test with two masks one forward one backwards normal people believe both masks are looking forward but that is untrue so if you see it and get it wrong your normal if you see the truth your crazy |

People w/ Aspergers/autism can, but dont always have 'T.O.M.' issues.
That means they dont talk much because they think you think their thoughts too. ...or share the same ideas. That means they assume a great deal about people without asking anyone too...They arent typically good at communicating but dont know that about themselves. An example could be what Volant said: QUOTE: normal people let other people do the thinking for them
it often seems people have no idea what im talking about i used to think there was something wrong with me but now i know that the normal people are brainwashed |

Not saying volant has any issue, just thought it would make for an example about assumptions and communication.

This is the kinda thing I have been studying so I would be very interested in anything you put up regarding Autism or Asperger's.
I only study Children so it would be interesting to learn more about Autism / Asperger's in Adults. |

go ahead and lecture the world on mental disorders.
they're kinda tricky to explain because it is all in our heads. and because they are in our heads we should be able to get rid of em. :D someone told me something awesome the other day: you wouldn't tell someone with cancer to just get over it, so why are you telling someone with a mental illness to get over it? |

These are developmental disorders rather than mental disorders except bipolar maybe. Oh, and I wouldnt call it 'illness'.
But very good statement: 'get over it' is not any solution. Such a statement is insulting and dismissive.

Another issue is 'ticks'...it could be tourettes, or it could be excessive blinking, or it could be the classic flapping of hands, or finger wiggling. May be rocking in a seat, or a hopping burst then a walk across a room.
It may be helpful to someone dating them, that you can liken it to cracking your knuckles or sucking your teeth after a meal. A friend o mine used to do that...brush your dern teeth dangit. anyhoo, ticks can be either controllable or not, depending on the person. If its controllable, they may wait til they have privacy or a comfortable environment. Consider that a compliment if they do it in front of you then. |
