Why is the holy ghost represented by a dove?
I googled holy ghost and got lots of pictures of a dove. |

I had a friend who opened her front door one time (years ago) and a dove had flown into her front door and broken the glass on the storm door and was killed. There was this dead dove at her feet.
We talked about what a strange sign that was, and wondered if someone had put it there on purpose or if it happened naturally. It was weird.

It is represented as a dove, because a dove is generally passive, it is white eg., pure. It is a beautiful bird, full of gentleness.

QUOTE: Jewish Symbolism Doves: The dove is a symbol of peace, purity, love, tenderness, and hope. Its gentleness and grace are used as a simile for female beauty and tenderness. As a result of its faithfulness to its mate it is also a symbol of marital fidelity and devotion. |

This is true. We apply the symbolism. I was just wondering where that symbolism came from originally and why it represents the holy ghost. |

At the Baptisim of Jesus....The Word says "And the Holy Spirit decended upon him AS a Dove".
A dove is seen as a Pure, peaceful, gentle bird. The symbolizm here is that the Holy Spirit decended upon Jesus in Pure gentle peace. The reference never intended that an actual dove decended. The scrupturial reference is...AS. |

He also sent a raven Genesis 8:7-9 (KJV) 7:And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth. 8:Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; |
