OK. I don't know where to put this topic, if anywhere. Does anyone have a problem with mice, rats and rabbits getting into their car/truck engines and building nests and chewing wires? How do I get rid of them? It's a problem. I've used moth balls when not using my car. Any ideas?

I have read a lot where moth balls are suppose to keep them away but that they smell as well, so not a option for me...

Also read that dryery sheets placed all in the car and tuck some under the hood will keep them away they don't like the smell of them but at least they would smell good...

Also read that if you place drops of mint oil they will stay away from that as well...

I have actually dealt with a squirrel of all things that got under my hood a few years ago.. Needless it was not a pretty site for my mechanic that had to deal with getting it out after I had started my car and the power steering belt caught it....

Then came across this that was posted so they might know since they deal with them all the time and this seems to work for them...

At our shop we see mice damaging or nesting in cars almost daily. The best solution that we have found is a product called the mouse blocker. The mouse blocker installs under the hood of the car and makes a noise that makes it uncomfortable for them to nest and in our dealings it has proven to be the best because you don't have to remember to change your dryer sheets or renew the peppermint oil and it doesn't smell like moth balls. We purchase them direct at www.mouseblocker.com

He gave the site he got the stuff from so maybe it will work for you.. or the dryer sheets even or mint may work...

Thanks TxsGal. It's been a problem for me for a few years. I have to try something.

Here there's a device, battery operated that gives out a really high pitched tone, un audible to us that keeps rodents away. maybe you could just place it near your car when parked or even under the hood!

Yes, there are a few online, just search "roadent repellent "many different types of plug in or battery. no point me sending a link as the uk is a different voltage.

We had a rat problem, only in and around the house, not in the vehicles. The Keys are infested with wood rats...they are protected down here. The only thing that worked was getting a couple cats. Now we have a cat problem...they weren't fixed til recently.

TxsGal's and Mikey's idea about the thing that makes noise sounds like the best option. The different scents normally work, but I think they get used to it.

Maybe some New York City residents can confirm this--I've heard that their sewer rats are so wild that even cats are afraid of them.

I haven't heard that about New York City, but I imagine some of them are pretty vicious and they often run in packs, so I can see cats being scared of them. I've heard in some places around the world, they are the size of cats...wouldn't want to come face to face with one of those.

The wood rats down here mostly do damage to the house, otherwise they seem fairly tame and run away if you approach them.

Rats, mice and even rabbits can be a problem. Someone who lives near me told me that he went away on a trip for a month and came back to find that his truck, that he left at his house, had a thousand dollars worth of damage done to his engine from pack rats eating through his wire system.
