Sanctuary city illegal immigrant sparks $61 million fire in Sequoia National Forest

WOFFORD HEIGHTS, Calif. — Angel Gilberto Garcia-Avalos had been deported five times in just the past four years, yet each time he has managed to sneak from Mexico back into the U.S., where he ended up in more mischief: driving without a license, attempted burglary and felony weapons charges.

In August, he graduated to full-fledged mayhem, sparking a fire in the Sequoia National Forest that has already cost the government $61 million and left some of the country’s most beautiful landscape scarred for years to come.

Garcia, who pleaded guilty last month and faces 13 months in prison, had only recently been released from the Kern County Jail. He likely would have been deported again, but local authorities were unable to report him to immigration authorities because of California’s new sanctuary city law, which prohibited the sheriff from communicating with federal agents.

Federal agents now say they will kick Garcia out of the country once he serves his latest sentence, but the damage has already been done.

At a point along State Highway 155 through the Sequoia National Forest, the smell of cedar gives way to the stench of soot. Ash-blackened trees above and below the roadway show the path of the blaze.

Investigators determined that the spark came from a Nissan Maxima that Garcia was driving over a rough dirt trail near Cedar Creek. Garcia tried to drive over a berm and hit a tree. The hot muffler on his car ignited grass parched by years of drought, investigators said in an account filed in federal court.

Ranchers rushing to the site of the fire saw Garcia who, despite the blaze raging over his shoulder, insisted he wasn’t aware of it much less responsible for it.

Investigators punctured his story by matching footprints from the car to those of Garcia and his son.

Decades to recover

John Chatel, an endangered species specialist who led the Forest Service’s evaluation team after the fire, said it wasn’t the most damaging burn he has seen but added that the effects could last for years.

Of the 29,000 acres that were touched by fire, more than half sustained moderate or high-intensity burns. Communities were evacuated in two counties, and a handful of cabins and outbuildings were scorched.

It took six weeks to fully contain the fire. Officials warned at the beginning of October that hot spots could persist until the first snows blanket the area and snuff out the last vestiges.

The fire didn’t spread to Sequoia National Park to the north of the forest, which is home to groves of the majestic trees.

But it took more than $60 million to contain and extinguish the blaze. Mr. Chatel submitted an emergency restoration plan at a cost of $500,000. That doesn’t include long-term restoration of campsites, cattle-grazing areas and long-term revegetation.

Mr. Chatel said the drought, now in its fifth year, probably will make it tougher for the forest to recover.

“It’s got to be really challenging — not impossible, but challenging — for a lot of the forest that was there historically to come back in a reasonable amount of time,” he said. “It’s going to take decades and decades from a conifer standpoint to get back what you lost.”

Destroying the landscape

Garcia has admitted to his role in the fire but shows little remorse.

Court documents say he got testy with the ranchers when they accused him. “How am I going to start that fire?” he said. “Does it look like I would do that?”

At one point while Garcia was talking with the ranchers, a glass methamphetamine pipe fell out of his pocket and he quickly moved to conceal it, Forest Service Special Agent Brian A. Adams wrote.

Garcia claimed the Nissan Maxima, which belonged to his girlfriend’s mother, was stolen when he and his son went to get some water — though there is no water source anywhere in the vicinity, the agent said.

Fires sparked by illegal immigrants are more common — and more controversial — along the border.

The federal government’s main fire information center tracks whether blazes were sparked by humans but doesn’t record their nationality or legal status.

In 2011, after a series of blazes in southern Arizona, Sen. John McCain blamed illegal immigrants. He was resoundingly rebuked by immigrant rights groups that said the Arizona Republican was speculating, scapegoating and spreading “hate and fear.”

Months later, the Government Accountability Office, Congress’ official nonpartisan watchdog, backed up the senator. GAO investigators reviewed 77 human-caused fires along the Arizona border and concluded that 30 of them were caused by illegal border crossers.

Worse yet, the presence of the illegal immigrants made fighting the fires even tougher. One investigator told The Washington Times that armed agents had to accompany firefighters.

In California, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said the problems go beyond fire. He said marijuana grows are becoming more frequent on federal lands. When they are raided, the grows are usually found to be manned by illegal immigrants — some of them forced into the labor. State and local law enforcement have become engaged in shootouts at the grows.

“They’re destroying the landscape of our national forest,” the sheriff told The Washington Times.

Garcia’s record

Garcia’s case illustrates the ongoing problem with the U.S.-Mexico border. Although less active than it was a decade ago, the border remains porous enough for bad elements to sneak across with apparent ease. That enabled Garcia to come back to his 4-year-old son, identified in court papers only by the initials G.G.

Garcia has a long criminal record that includes auto theft, burglary and firearms charges. Nabbed last year after failing to appear in court to face felony charges, he was sentenced to more than a year in jail and was released for good behavior after serving 194 days.

In the past, Kern County would have reported him to federal immigration agents and his criminal record and repeated deportations would have made him a priority case. But California’s Trust Act, signed into law last year by Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, put an end to that cooperation.

“We didn’t hold him because he did not meet the Trust Act,” Sheriff Youngblood said.

Now that he is in federal prison, ICE will have better luck when he is released upon completion of a 13-month sentence to which he agreed in his plea bargain.

But given his proficiency at sneaking back into the U.S., there is little sense that he will be deterred.

“We have to change the risk-cost-benefit equation,” said Jessica Vaughan, policy studies director at the Center for Immigration Studies. “There are always going to be these multiple re-entry cases, and we should prosecute more of them, but at a certain point it is no longer a deterrent; that’s why we have to make it harder for them to get back in.”

She said families of repeat offenders in the country illegally could also be deported, removing the incentive for them to come back. Ms. Vaughan said targeting the smuggling operations that help sneak migrants into the U.S. would help.

Gareth Johnson MP, former chair of the All Parliamentary Group on Infertility, whose own children were born thanks to fertility treatment, said: “I’m in general a supporter of IVF. But I’ve never regarded infertility as a disability or a disease but rather a medical matter.

“I’m the first to say you should have more availability of IVF to infertile couples but we need to ensure this whole subject retains credibility.

IVF is classed as a disability

“This definition runs the risk of undermining the work Nice and others have done to ensure IVF treatment is made available for infertile couples when you get definitions off the mark like this. I think it’s trying to put IVF into a box that it doesn’t fit into frankly.”

But Dr David Adamson, an author of the new standards, argued it is a “big chance” for single and gay people.

He said: “The definition of infertility is now written in such a way that it includes the rights of all individuals to have a family, and that includes single men, single women, gay men, gay women.

"It puts a stake in the ground and says an individual's got a right to reproduce whether or not they have a partner. It's a big change.

"It fundamentally alters who should be included in this group and who should have access to healthcare. It sets an international legal standard. Countries are bound by it."

A spokesman for the Department of Health said the NHS was under no obligation to follow World Health Organisation’s final advice.

Under the Equality Act 2010 a person is disabled if they have a physical or mental impairment that has a 'substantial' and 'long-term' negative effect on their ability to do normal daily activities.

But Libby Purves, presenter of Radio 4’s Midweek, was scathing about the new recommendation.

She said: “When a flaky new human right is suddenly tossed out by a serious UN agency it is not just silly but dangerous.

“The World Health Organisation, which has plenty else on its plate, has long defined infertility as a disability.

“It is sad but not disabled compared to someone who is blind, deaf, mentally impaired, or seriously crippled.”

According to Muslim tradition, a man is allowed to have up to four wives as long as he can support them financially.

eBae: 21yo woman auctions off virginity to help cash-strapped family

In hard times, it’s not unusual for young people to sell off items of value to make money. But instead of selling old clothes on eBay, Katherine Stone is selling off a hotter commodity – her virginity. So far, the highest bidder has offered $400,000.

Money can’t buy you love, but it can buy you Stone’s virginity. The 21-year-old was inspired by the story of a woman who tried to auction off her virginity in 2008 to pay for college tuition. After that, she came across an ad for a brothel on Facebook.

“I saw an ad on Facebook and found out all about the brothels, and the money made me think, wow, it’s a chance at, like, fixing all that I really need to fix,” Stone told CNN’s Lisa Ling on 'This is Life.'

It all began in December 2014, when an electrical fire burned down the uninsured house of Stone's family. Stone struggled, watching her parents rebuild their lives after losing everything.

“For a time, my parents were actually living at the burned-down house,” she told The Washington Post.

From there, she contacted Dennis Hof, owner of the Kit Kat Guest Ranch – one of 18 licensed, legal brothels in one of Nevada’s eight counties that have legalized prostitution.

Hof had reservations about Stone, saying that he gets a minimum of three or four women a month looking to sell their virginity.

“You get girls that come to us, 'I’m broke, busted, can’t be trusted.' We don’t want to hire that girl,” he told The Washington Post.

But after meeting both Stone and her mother, he agreed to let her hold the auction, and she moved to the Kit Kat Ranch in May. While Stone’s mother is not thrilled with the arrangement, she still supports her daughter. “My mom still tells me she loves me," Stone said.

Since moving to the ranch, Stone has worked on providing massages and what is known as the “girlfriend experience.”

“It really is about the experience,” Stone explained. “We provide people with companionship they’re missing in life...it’s more than just sex."

As for the auction itself, it is still progressing. Stone has received several bids, with one offering $400,000. However, she is looking at more than the bottom line before she accepts a bid. She explained that she’ll offer her favorite bidder a “girlfriend experience” and judge from there if she will take him up on his offer.

Stone is not concerned about regretting her decision. “People say you’re supposed to do it for love,” she told Ling. “But if you think about it, I’m doing it because I love my family.”

This is not the first time a connection between Hillary Clinton and Eleanor Roosevelt has been made.

Author Bob Woodward claimed in his 1996 book “The Choice” that Hillary engaged in imaginary conversations with Mrs. Roosevelt as well as Mahatma Gandhi as a therapeutic exercise.

For years the political elites, backed by funding from George Soros, have fought common sense voter ID laws as blatant attempts of racist right wingers to suppress the votes of minority and low-income citizens. These same people tirelessly argue that there is no evidence of voter fraud despite the mountain of facts that keeps piling up the contrary. The latest evidence comes from Indiana, where CBS points out that the state's voter registration database, like many others around the country, are "riddled with errors" including 1,000s of duplicate registrations and dead voters.

A data analysis firm hired by a voter registration group said on Tuesday that Indiana’s voter database is riddled with errors, including thousands of people over the age of 110 who would likely be deceased but are still on the registration list.

TargetSmart conducted a review of the state voter file maintained by Republican Secretary of State Connie Lawson’s office on behalf of Patriot Majority, a voter registration group with deep ties to the Democratic Party that says it was trying to register black voters in Indiana. Patriot Majority has been the focal point of a state police probe of possible voter fraud. The group said the discovery of numerous problems in the voter database does not necessarily mean this was the result of fraud.

TargetSmart said it also found 837,000 voters with out-of-date addresses when compared to the United States Postal Service address database, or roughly one-in-five of all Indiana registered voters. The review found 4,556 duplicate registrations, 3,000 records without dates of birth and 31 records of registered voters who are too young to cast a ballot. More than 2,500 people on the rolls were listed over the age of 110.

Meanwhile, Christian Adams, former Voting Section Attorney at the US Department of Justice under George Bush, recently highlighted on Fox News the inexplicable reluctance of politicians to clean up the voter roles.

"Dead people are voting and it’s something this administration does not want to do anything about. They must like it. They must like who they are voting for… Now we have four million, four million Steve, ineligible and dead voters on American voter rolls according to the Pew Charitable Trust."

As we've noted before, according to research conducted by the Pew Center in 2012, the capacity for voter fraud across the U.S. is substantial with nearly 2mm dead people found to be registered and nearly 3mm people registered in multiple states.

But something tells us, no matter how many of these types of situations emerge over and over, that U.S. citizens, and common sense for that matter, will never prevail in the war against George Soros and the simple political narrative that voter I.D. laws and other practical solutions are somehow racist and/or disenfranchise low-income voters.

Just in time for Halloween, the Paper of Record published a seven-year-old’s nightmare sure to send chills down the spine of many Hillary Clinton supporters: Out of nowhere, Donald Trump appeared.

That alone may scare even the most intrepid New York Times reporter, but it gets worse: this isn’t “bad-hair Donald,” this is “zombie” Donald, and he’s going from house to house evicting Muslims and throwing them in jail.

The dream was described to the paper by a seven-year-old Muslim girl living in New York City’s “whitest” borough, Staten Island. She reportedly had the nightmare after watching the second presidential debate with her family when Trump called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”

She reportedly told her father about her vision of the “zombie Donald” and he reassured her.

“Don’t worry,” Bilal Elcharfa, 52, a taxi cab driver, told his daughter. “He’s just talk.”

The article, titled “I Had a Scary Dream About Donald Trump: Muslim Parents Face a Tense Election,” investigates far more serious issues later on and, of course, nobody likes to read about a distressed seven-year-old. But some of the paper’s online critics labeled the article another hit job against Trump, this time using a child to sell the point.

“Is there no level too low for you to sink, you fear mongers? Bringing a child into this?” one commenter on Facebook posted.

Elcharfa goes on to discuss challenges Muslim parents have when discussing Trump’s rhetoric with their children and said the environment has made a lot of Muslim families pull their children out of public schools in favor of Islamic schools.

The article features a series of photographs that include pictures of Elcharfa’s childen gazing at a Trump campaign sign as though they were stopped in their tracks and a picture of Elcharfa tucking his daughter into bed.

The girl’s father told The Times he came to the U.S. from war-torn Lebanon with “the hopes of raising a family in the safety in the United States.”

Trump has talked tough on immigration throughout his campaign, and has repeatedly called for a temporary ban on Muslim immigrants to the country “until we can figure this thing out.”

Staten Island is the rare borough in New York City that favors Trump. The article mentions that the Elcharfas live surrounded by Trump supporters: “A few blocks from the Elcharfa home in the South Beach neighborhood a large flag for Mr. Trump’s campaign flaps in the wind, and a Trump sign is prominent in a yard around the corner.”

“I’m trying to let my kids live in peace,” Elcharfa said. “I don’t want them to worry.”

DEVELOPING: The U.S. Secretary of Defense said Tuesday that he is ordering the Pentagon to suspend its effort to recover the decade-old reenlistment bonuses paid to thousands of California Army National Guard soldiers who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

About 2,000 soldiers were recently told they had to repay the cash bonuses that, in some cases, amounted to $15,000 or more.
