I'm not an expert by far but it depends on what you want to do with it. Many programs use Java, even if they're not based on it, and many games are made with Java or Flash. Granted they tend to be unstable depending on the the PC and the talent of the coders but I find Java much more versatile than, say, DirectX or OpenGL. Java browser games aren't about to disappear and Oracle boasts that billions of machines run Java, from your pc to your car and gps.
I don't think there's a computer language better than an other. I think they all have their appropriate uses.
