So during my 1024 mile trip, I drove my '95 SS through the smokies for some white knuckle driving. Doing 90mph along the side of a mountain is a thrill indeed (when the road was open). I'm upset with myself that I didn't make a detour to travel the Tail of the Dragon (US-129 along the south end of the smokies)! 300+ twists and turns in 11 miles would be heaven with the new tires :)

Anyway, that's my driving story for now.

and why would you be driving 90 MPH? Not only is it not safe for you, it's not safe for anyone else that may have been on that road. I'm all for thrill seeking... as long as it's your thrill and you're not endangering others. Just a thought, maybe everyone else driving the same road that day wasn't looking for a thrill, or a near accident. flowerforyou Glad you're OK.

I own and '95 Impala SS; I have twice the traction of most cars in production and a bit more experience driving in the curves. However, I did not hit 90mph with anyone else in the vicinity, only when I was the only one for a stretch of road. I prefer the race track, and I drive like a grandmother on almost all occasions.. just something about those curves!

A bit more experience would mean you wouldn't drive 90flowerforyou

haha. If you're ever in town, I'll take you to a track some time for a little bit of infield driving!

If you are completely against exciting driving, even in regulated conditions, there's no arguing! lol. We can just agree to disagree.

As for experience, it means I know the limits of my vehicle, which would have handled those curves upwards of 120mph. At 90mph, there wasn't even tire squealing. Huzzah for 255/50r17W's

My point is that driving on those roads no matter what your experiece at 90 and 120 mph is just plain reckless. I'm no stranger to speeding. I'm also not a prude and I love a good thrill as much as the next person. However, when you're driving at those speeds on public roads, it endangers other people that have nothing to do with you or your thrill seeking. Unexpected things can happen. You hit an animal on a curve going 90 mph and you could be totally screwed.

All I'm saying is that if I'm on the same road you are, you don't have the right to involve me in your thrill seeking. I've seen to many people killed this way because they think they're a better driver than others. They get to cocky. Then the unexpected happens and we're scraping what's left of you off the concrete.

There wasn't anyone on the stretch of road when I was topping 90, so your point and argument is moot there. I am very considerate of my surroundings and wouldn't be doing foolish stuff with others near by.

As for me getting scrapped off the road? Its a very small chance when you factor in the limited time spent at those speeds, along with everything else. Hitting an animal at even 45mph, much less highway speeds, is a very bad situation no mater how you look at it.

i have taken many drives through the smokies. (the main problem i had, was when the thick fog rolled in, & out.) when you can not see; that can be a problem.

That would have been mind numbing I think. I wouldn't even been driving the speed limit if I couldn't see.

I live here and have been on those roads many times.
If he had driven them at 90 in a vette he wouldnt be talking to us now!

I wasn't on the tail of the dragon. I said I really wished I had driven it. I was on my way to Dandridge and running late, so I didn't detour through us19 to us129.

I'll give you a ring when I'm up that way next time. Also, there aren't many vetts with the nerves to beat a few guys from the GASSIT or SomkinSS clubs

edit: to dandridge from ashville

You better stick to those flat straight roads!
You couldnt drive 90 on 64 from Henersonville to Bat Cave let alone through the smokies!

64 is a far bit south of where I was, to be clear I just staid on 40, 90 is very easy on that road. 64 does look hella fun though, and no, I would not do 90 on that road either.

Flat, straight roads are boring!

I have to tell you, I've not driven through there myself in a long time. It really was amazing.
