And Dan's the expert on hiking in the midwest, so there's no need to look further.

I've been to The Black Hills in South Dakota a few times. They have some killer trails there. It's very scenic and quiet. Except maybe during Sturgis.laugh

You can go to Nebraska and take one tremendously long, flat hike! laugh

Pick part of the Appalatian trail and do it....some parts rock and others are not as great from what I hear. I bet there is some great hiking in west Virginia as well or Southern Ohio.

Great suggestions here, as far as near you. Have done and agree on The Smokies, Appalachian Trail, Pennsylvania, Virginia, W Va, Gatlinburg.

Upper peninsula Michigan is so beautiful too, and you could swim Lake Superior.

The Ozark Mountains in Arkansas/Missouri are also fine, and near!

Haven't done the Dakota Black Hills, think that'd be grand methinks. You are spoiled for choice.

Stay in the Natl. forests and follow the great rivers, it is free, quiet and SO beautiful.

Another GREAT thing to do is plan a hot springs trip and follow those, bliss! Esp., when there is a river combination.

flowerforyou Enjoy!

The Black hills of SD are not that far. The Badlands are great! This is a very unique area if you have not been.
