Drinking - I'm an occasional drinker, but I think one can find scriptural support for moderate drinking. There are also some health benefits. Excessive drinking is another matter. Jesus would not have changed water to wine at Cana if it had been a sin to drink

Smoking - I don't smoke either. And the current health position would be against it. If one were a light smoker doing minimal damage to the body, that might not run afoul of scripture.

Eating, drinking, smoking excessively is a sin - it is one of the 7 deadly sins.

I dont know, I dont drink ever, but I smoke cigerettes.

I believe in spiritual progress, not spiritual perfection.

None of us will ever be perfect.. ever.

Well without a relationship with Christ doesn't matter. bible says he is going to hell whether he smokes and drinks or doesn't. As far as is it a sin I encourage you to read the bible. Search the scriptures. You can see support for drinking depending on perspective.
Here are 4 tests you can use to determine any decision or behavior you are doing
1)Am I doing this for the glory of God, or just to please myself?
2)Am I rushing ahead impulsively, or am I willing to wait?
3)Can I defend what I am doing from the word of God?
4)As I contemplate this move do I have joy and peace within?

So for this you could ask
1) Does smoking or drinking bring glory to God?
2) Do I feel anxious when I think about having a drink or smoke?
3) Can you support smoking and drinking from the word of God?
4) Is there joy and peace when I think about smoking and drinking?

People don't go to hell for their individual acts of sin anyway. Those that are believers have been reconciled, past tense, to God through Christ Jesus and our sins are no longer being imputed unto us. (2 Cor. 5:19)

Sins, or acts of sin, are not the issue between us and God any longer. People go to hell for sin singular, as in the old sin nature. Once we become born again our old sin nature is put to death and our new man is created in rightesnous and true holines (Eph. 4:24)

There are so many examples of this in scripture. Even David said, "Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin". He didn't say "might not" or or "cannot". He said "will not". The sin issue has been dealt with. Sin has to be judged, yes, but sin was judged in the flesh of the Lord Jesus and now sins are no longer keeping us separated from God. That's the Gospel.

Romans 8:3
God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh...

Jesus Himself said this in John Chapter 16:

7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

9Of sin, because they believe not on me;

Notice in verse 8 He says that the Spirit will convince the world of "sin" singular. Not "sins" as in acts of sin. And then He goes on in verse 9 to tell us what that one sin is: Not believing on Him!

People don't go to hell for drinking or smoking. Or committing adultery, or murder, or lying, or any other acts of sin. People go to Hell for not accepting the payment for their sins, the Lord Jesus Christ!

Amen!

all things in moderation

may be a sin against your health or body but I don't think it will put you in hell

Doing anything that Harms your body, when you know better is a sin.

However, Peter said ALL THINGS ARE LAWFULL FOR ME TO DO, BUT NOT ALL THINGS ARE EXPEDIANT.

Meaning that you are given Free choice to do as you enjoy doing, as long as it's not in excess. like falling down drunk, ro doing drugs to the point of passing out, or smoking yourself to death.

God wants us to be Habbit Free, but he is Not an Ogor, nor will he condem you for doing that, unless what you are doing offends someone close to you.

There are many lessons where the Bible talks about many topics, and one is eating things that the Bible says not to eat. The Bible/Peter, was told in a two fold lesson, what can be eaten and not, and all was made clean after Jesus dies on the cross.

The Bible says that if something you do in the company of believers, offends someone, for us to respect them, and not do it. But he never said we were Never allowed to do it, only around those who it would offend.

It seems the Act of Offending someone with something we do, can be considered Disrespectful, and also SIN.
But God only gave us 10 real laws that we HAD to follow, and Jesus said that till the end of the world pass, Not one Jot or Tiddle would in no wise be removed from the law. That is telling me that even though so many Christians say the Law of Moses was done away with, that the Bible, and Jesus said it has Not been done away with, and we need to keep living it.

We are in some ways the victims of our culture. In order to stimulate the economy (in one aspect), it is acceptible to advertise the buying of greasy junk food burgers. But if that was all the food you ever ate, it would eventually kill you before your time. The tobacco lobby spends millions a year to whitewash the fact that cigarette smoking causes cancer. In America and the industrialized nations, many things can be bought just for sport or pleasure. But where does a person draw the line for pleasure? Its very easy for an alcoholic to justify the next drink, or even thank God for providing it to him or her.

There is a school of thought that purity is the best option, but few find that path comfortable and a good fit to their existence in the American culture. Where one might abstain from alcohol, or cigarettes, or drugs, or too much food, there is most likely always going to be room for growth. No one has "arrived" even those that claim to have reached some form of spiritual awakeness and might claim they have "more" of God than the next person.

There is a verse that comes to mind... "Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect." (Matthew 5:48) and another... "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Philippians 4:13)... Folks seem to cop out and hang on to their habits and vices with the plea "no one is perfect"... its sort of like the little choo-choo train who says "Can't"... but through Christ all things are possible.

You can quit smoking... with God's help. Most likely if you've tried to quit, you did it on your own... and failed. I used to smoke 4 packs a day... back when cigs were $1.45 a pack. Eventually I couldn't breathe any more in the morning, late at night I would wake up coughing and hacking my guts out. Finally, in God's mercy, he showed me a way out of that addiction. Folks are so chicken to admit that smoking is an additicion. The truth about smoking is this... the only benefit to smoking is the stimulation you give the tobacco companies on their balance sheet when they do their accounting. It causes cancer, has taken millions of lives, and people can easily justify it is "ok" to inhale the gunk into the temple of the Holy Spirit. It wasn't ok for me, and God helped me out of that predictament.

But I will assure you there are plenty of areas where I need God everyday. I crave and desire a closer walk with my Lord every moment of my life. I know I eat too much, I exercise too little, I could make a list of condemning attributes that would fill volumes at the Library of Congress.

But in spite of all of my weaknesses, all of my vices, all of my human qualities... Jesus loves me with a passionate love. I think that is the greatest thought any human can set their mind on. That we have a Savior that loves us passionately. Then no matter what weakness we struggle with, be it tobacco, drugs, alcohol, gluttony, or any thing anyone can name. Jesus can love us through it all.

There is a concept in the Bible... the story about the five wise and five foolish virgins. See Matthew 25:1-13. Some of the folks in that story were wise enough to be prepared, and some were a bit foolish and unprepared. The foolish ones took their lamps, but didn't take any oil. They weren't prepared. The wise ones took oil for their lamps. They made sure they were prepared.

The last verse of that parable is the kicker...

...v13 - "Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh."

The idea of this passage is to be ever vigilent and ever prepared to meet God. I suggest that everyone have a good prayer about these things. While you are praying, light up a cig and blow some smoke in the Savior's face and see if he likes it. Go ahead and pray while gorging yourself on that meal you know has too many calories. Pray while you are guzzling some beer or chugging down some wine. Paul said to "Pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17). So, how easy is it for you to pray to a Holy God while in the middle of indulging one of your vices?

That ought to show you where you are at with the issue.

Can you be face-to-face with his Holiness, and still do the thing you do? If not, then he can give you the strength to overcome it.

Because that is what He does... help us overcome.
