What is the duty of a "public servant"?

1. To do what the public wants thus serving the desires of the public.

2. To do what serves the public well in spite of what the public wants thus serving humanity as a whole?

I'm just asking. Feel free to offer other possible scenarios/descriptions as well. I'm not here to "debate" the issue. I'm just curious what kind of responses this thread will generate.

The public servant follows the rules, laws that society has established for us, the public. Whether we like it or not...

a public servant can be any number of public officials elected or ohter wise (EX police to serve and protect) Also, there are those who do not serve a public office so to speak. Any caring person who is active within a organized group that does something for the community of fellow man also included (EX. Church...helping those who are in need...) I think everyone should indulge in serving the public in some way...It is good and makes you feel so good inside:smile:

I think it's both.

I think it is mostly number two,,, doing what serves the public well, because in this global environment, the public is often woefully undereducated on what is really going on in the world and how one thing impacts another
