Baseball is known as the great American pastime. A sport loved dearly by myself and millions of others. Yet there's no recent topic in these here forums?! A gazillion topics about what you'd do to the person above ya, but not ONE topic on baseball??? huh

Am I the only one that's a baseball fan here? tears grumble

I don't care. I'm starting this topic 'cause I'm not JUST a fan, I am THE fan, as in the epitome of the fanatical fan that lives and dies for her team. Take one look at my profile if ya need evidence. My dog is named Trot, cats were Nixon and Sox. I have more Sox shirts than skirts in my closet. Saying I'm an avid Sox fan is a huge understatement, kinda like saying the pope is religious. So y'all will have to deal with this topic popping up 162-181 times a year, give or take depending how deep we go into the post season. This year we're deep...it's playoff baseball folks! drinks

So welcome to the fan attic, where the strange Sox addict lives. She sits around and talks Sox to herself and her loyal dog Trot. If ya wanna know how the Sox did, this is the place to come! waving

Or if ya just wanna say something about baseball, feel free.

(And yes I know the season is almost over but inspiration wears no watch...did I mention it's playoff baseball folks?! What BETTER time?!?)

I'll start! Go Sox!!!

Figures that I post a topic about the great American pastime and the only person that visits is a flippin' Canadian! Perfect! laugh

Nice to see ya John. Thanks for stopping in. flowerforyou

Okay, so baseball isn't hockey. Will it make ya feel better if I say "How 'bout them Bruins!?" once in awhile in here? 'Cause I can do that! bigsmile

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Now to recap the Sox game tonight. We lost. It sucked. That should cover it. grumble

Oh okay. I said I'd post about the Sox games and I'm a woman of my word so here goes...

We went into tonight's game with the 2-1 lead in the best of 7 series against the Tigers. The first 3 games highlighted pitching with each team edging out the other in 1-0 squeakers, Detroit taking game one and the Sox getting the W in game 3. Game 2 featured some Big Papi late inning heroics, with our clutch slugger smacking a grand slam to tie it at 5 in the 8th, before a walkoff hit by Saltalamacchia in the 9th gave the Sox the victory to tie up the series. And yes, that's his real name, he's our catcher, a big dude that whiffs a lot but gets the job done behind the dish and did it at the plate in this particular game. It's been a hard fought series thus far and I'm sure the road won't get any easier.

Tonight we sent Jake Peavy to the mound, a veteran guy but one that's never been at this level before now. Nerves must have gotten to him in his first ALCS game as he was pretty shaky throughout, giving up plenty of hits to the potent Detroit offense and more than a handful of runs. Boston bats couldn't solve their guy Fister, at least not with any consistency, and the boys fell in game 4 7-3. Win some, lose some, and tonight the Sox end up on the wrong side of the coin.

So we'll do it again tomorrow for the final game in Detroit before heading back to Boston afterwards. It's basically down to a best of 3 now and I still have complete confidence in my team. We have home field advantage and the best team in baseball this year. Gotta feel good about our chances. Ever confident and always loyal...

Go Sox!!

Guess who just won game 5 of the ALCS? bigsmile

 Way to go Red Sox!!

We need one more win against Detroit to advance to The Big Show. Took an early lead tonight with the bats, and our ace lefty John Lester got the job done on the mound. Detroit tried to mount a comeback but our outstanding closer Koji Uehara slammed the door, notching the final five outs for the save and a Sox 4-3 win. The boys head home to Fenway for game 6 Saturday with Clay Buchholz slated to toe the rubber for the Sox. Should be another great game, and you can bet I'll be glued to the TV. shades

So try to contain your enthusiasm. The posts here shall continue! Go Sox!!

Guess who are the reigning American League Champions and headed to the World Series?!

Shane Victorino smacks a game winning grand slam in the 7th, the perfect redemption for the blown sac bunt earlier in the game, and the boys wrap up the series with another exciting win!! The fans go wild, this one more so than most, and the champagne's flowing in the Sox locker room right now. Way to go Red Sox!!

And we live to play another day. Plus y'all get to hear my rantings for at least four more games. And listen... it's Kool and the Gang..."We gonna have a good time tonight. Let's celebrate! It's alright!" Woo Hoo! drinks

I've been saying that since day 1! Of course I say that day 1 of every year. laugh

But I REALLY meant it this year! We had an outstanding starting rotation going in, a team that seemed to gel and have fun like the guys in '04 did, power up and down the line up, and of course the new manager (THANK GOD for that!). I knew it was gonna be a special year, and here we are, 27 hrs and 28 mins 'til game one of the World Series! But who's counting?!

Papi's slam...epic!! Victorino's...just as cool as he rarely gets the big hit and a trot around the bases. Both were clutch and I'm thrilled we were able to win that series. Detroit starters were phenomenal! St. Louis won't be any easier either, but I have faith! bigsmile

Nice to see another Sox fan on here. As you can see, it's not exactly hopping in this joint. Well, except for me and the little hoppy dude... Go Sox!!!!

One down, three to go!!

Sox take game 1 in fine fashion, defeating St. Louis soundly 8-1. Lester stymies the Cardinals through 7 2/3 shutout innings for the win, while the St. Louis defense throws game one away with three costly errors. Now that's not to the say the Boston bats didn't do their share making 'em pay for their mistakes. The boys came up big with Napoli posting the first 3 RBI on a bases clearing double in the first. The boys added a few more in the 2nd, although it could have been much worse for the Cards. Beltran made a spectacular catch over the bullpen wall to rob Big Papi of a grand slam, but David Ortiz would not be denied for the entire game, sending one yard in the later innings to add a few more runs to the total and seal the deal.

Game 2 tomorrow night. Same time, same place, same teams. Different starting pitchers though of course. Sox will feature veteran hurler John Lackey, a guy with as much grit and energy out there on the mound as anyone, against a rookie pitcher for St. Louis. Kid must be decent though or he wouldn't be getting the nod so we'll see how that turns out. He's likely never faced a line-up like the Boston bats though, and pressure's on with his team already in a 1-0 hole.

We swept these guys in '04 to reverse the curse and bring home a championship after 86 years. One of the greatest moments for us Sox fans, truly. Perhaps we can do it again and cut that time between championships down to 6 yrs instead of 86! shades

You know I'll be watching. And updating after the game, or before, or both! Until then...Go Sox!!!bigsmile

Mr October Strikes Again !!!!!!

Sox throw game 2 away. Literally. Cards win 4-2 and we head off to St. Louis knotted at one each in the best of seven.

Cards struck first in this one, scoring one on a sac fly in the 4th off our guy Lackey, but Papi deposited one into the Monster seats to give the BoSox the 2-1 edge. Unfortunately our pen couldn't hold the lead. Craig Breslow came in to induce a short pop fly to left with runners on and tagging up. Throw to the plate by Gomes ends up getting by Salti for the error and a tie game, but the real damage was done by Breslow backing him up. He threw a 95mph heater to third trying to get the runner there that ended up in the bleachers. St. Louis takes the 3-2 lead on some terrible defense! They added one more before Breslow left the mound and the boys couldn't solve the Cards pen in their half innings at the plate, with the Cardinals' closer whiffing all 3 of our guys in the 9th.

So off we go to St. Louis. There will be no sweep for either team this year as the best of the best fight these games out. Hopefully my boys come out on top in the end. I have faith.

Gotta love October baseball!! bigsmile

Game 3 begins now! Well shortly. Guess who I'm rooting for?? rofl

Go Sox!!!!

Jake Peavy gets the nod for the Sox tonight. No DH since we're playing in St. Louis, so we either lose Big Papi or Napoli's bat at least for the early innings, and Peavy will bat in the nine hole. He's from the NL though, years with the Pirates prior to joining the Sox this year if I'm not mistaken (don't quote me), so at least he's familiar with swinging the bat. Hopefully he does his job and lets our bats do theirs and the boys can celebrate when it's over. Along with me of course!

Enjoy the game all you baseball fans! rofl

Go Sox!!!

Sox lost. And it wasn't just that they lost, but how they lost. ohwell

At least the game will go down in World Series history and never be forgotten, especially by disgruntled Sox fans and jubilant Cardinal fans. Allow me to recap the unbelievable play that resulted in the walkoff win.

First I'll set the scene. Bottom of the ninth in a hard fought great game. Sox starter Jake Peavy struggled right from the start. They said he was too fine in his last start, a loss, so he decided it'd be better to throw down the middle of the plate. Unfortunately the strong Cardinal batters took batting practice on him, striking for 4 singles and two runs before the first was finally over. He settled down a bit after that, but then had to work out of a bases loaded nobody out jam in the 4th, which he did, keeping the boys in the game. Hats off to him for batttling through four!

The momentum seemed to shift in the Sox favor after that, spurred by our young phenom Xander Bogaerts who started things off with a triple the following inning. Sac fly delivered the Sox first run (I think) and we tied it up shortly thereafter. Cards scored a few more in the 7th off our pen, a move I didn't agree with that bit John Farrell in the butt, but our bats bailed him out and tied it up again to knot it at four each going into the bottom of the ninth.

Then 'the play' happened. Our closer Uehara tried to keep the score tied, but St Louis put a couple of runners on with one out. Infield pulls in, sharp ground ball up the middle that looks like it's a walkoff hit. Pedey dives and makes an incredible play, fires home to Saltalamacchia waiting at the plate for Molina. Out! Sweet. Meanwhile the other runner was advancing to third, so Salti pegs it down there a bit wild and Middlebrooks dives for the ball, missing it. Their dude tries to go home and trips over our guy, then gets up and heads to the plate. Our left fielder backing up the play pegs it home and Salti makes a fine play to tag him out! Oh my God, we got out of it, still tied, onto extra innings.

Or so I thought. huh

Not so. Apparently the rules say a player can't impede a runner from advancing, intentional or not, and the runner is given one base, in this case home with the winning run! Game over. Cards win on an obstruction call...5-4, 2-1 series lead now! noway

That's just a crappy way to lose a ballgame, especially one as important as this. Wouldn't have mattered if the tables had been turned, I'd be saying the same thing. The rule should be changed. It wasn't our guys fault for diving to make the play and the runner tripping over him. I could see if he TRIED to impede him, but c'mon now! No matter though, what's done is done. We lost. Shake it off and play again today...in about 6 hours. bigsmile

I'll be watchin' and rootin' of course. How can I not when wild **** like this happens?!? And because it's all just a matter of perspective, I choose to see it like this....

Now the Sox will win it all in Fenway and the Fenway Faithful will be involved in the celebration. The crowd will go wild, the streets will fill up with ecstatic fans in Boston and the party won't occur miles away with the team in St. Louis! Yup, I still have faith!! Go Sox!!!!

Game 4 in the books and my Boston club comes out the victor with a 4-2 final score. Another great game, another memorable ending. While not nearly as controversial as the night before, it did involve another base running play and another costly error, but this time it was the Sox that benefit from the blunder.

Bottom of the ninth, two out, one on, and our closer Uehara picks off the pinch runner at first base with the tying run standing at home plate in the form of the best hitter in baseball, Carlos Beltran. That should just NEVER happen! Cards were stunned, as were the fans, and just like that, game over, Sox win, Koji gets another save, series tied up 2-2. bigsmile

Gutsy start by our guy Clay Buchholz who was pitching on fumes but got the job done going four innings giving up one unearned run. Our pen did a phenomenal job, with Felix Doubront giving us a few great innings, and Workman, Breslow, and Tazawa getting the job done as well. Our game 2 starter John Lackey even came in as a reliever for the first time since '07 and worked a scoreless 8th. Uehara closes it out, highlighted by the pickoff at first to end the game. Great job by the guys on the mound.

Gomes is the Sox hero at the plate, smacking a 3 run shot to deep center after the intentional walk to Big Papi that will end up being the difference in this one. To think he wasn't supposed to even play last night, but he got the call when back pain befell our regular right fielder Shane Victorino. He certainly made the most of his start!! Way to go man!!

We play the final game in St. Louis tonight. Same pitching match-up as game 1...our ace lefty Jon Lester vs their guy Wainwright. Should be another great game. Best of three now. We're getting our money's worth this October! shades

Go Sox!!
