Why the Racial Wealth Gap Could Spell Doom for America's Superpower Status

news.yahoo.com/why-racial-wealth-gap-could-spell-doom-americas-183454552.html

According to the report, between 2005 and 2011, the median net worth of minority households remained at recession-era levels, "reflecting a drop of 58 percent for Latinos, 48 percent for Asians, [and] 45 percent for African Americans," compared to just 21 percent for whites. Moreover, the differences in both net worth and cash on hand are even more striking.

Beyond Broke researchers found the median liquid wealth for Latinos is a mere $340, while African Americans have just $200 in liquid assets. On the other hand, Asians hold $19,500 in median liquid wealth, compared to $23,000 by whites. Furthermore, Blacks and Latinos are twice as likely as whites to have no financial assets.

And, back in December, President Obama admitted that Americans have "often accepted more income inequality than many other nations" because we believe our country "is a place where even if you're born with nothing, with a little hard work you can improve your own situation over time." While America purports to be a land of dreams only limited by how hard one works, the facts don't match the myth.

If the saying "A rising tide lifts all boats" is true, the report's authors write that America must get serious about ensuring its poorest citizens can attain the dream of financial security. Otherwise, we risk turning into a waning superpower whose best, and most prosperous days, are behind it.

whoa

This is the kind of delusional reasoning that occurs when elected elitists don't live in the real world where the majority of Americans exist.

We all just accept our lot in life because we truly believe if we work hard enough we can improve our lives? And those who can't seem to get ahead no matter how hard we struggle it's our own damn fault so we just eagerly wallow in defeat?

We're a superpower? huh

Since when?

Seems to me if we had any superpower at all our country would be the best in the world already.

So only if you are the best in the world can you be a superpower? That would mean only 1 country could ever hold that title at one time. If our country was so bad we wouldn't have an immigration problem like we do. To think that people can not make something of themselves is just an excuse. Can you be a millionaire just because you work hard? No. Do some people have more access? Sure. I poor kid born in NYC has a better chance of becoming an actor on broadway than a kid from Kentucky. That doesn't mean the kid from Kentucky can't achieve the same thing.

the 'world' is full of countries and cultures, because people choose america to live doesnt mean we dont need improving,, battered wives also choose to stay in their situation because they fear there is something 'worse' if they leave,, its picking the better of two evils sometimes,,,and not knowing the reality from the fantasy that is advertised,,

the article said we would be a 'waning' superpower,, which indicates that there isnt a requirement that there only be one,,,

but that some are stronger than others,,,,

IDK where you live or what opportunities you've had that leads you to think EVERYBODY has the same chances just because this IS America... but it's NOT that way here in Alabama... and I speak from personal experience...

here, the men think they still have absolute control over women and the right to beat us if we step out of their line...

here, the men created a master/slave contract in which they enslaved a woman to a large corporation without her knowledge or consent for the remainder of her natural life and actually aid and abet in her physical and emotional abuse (torturing)...

here, they gang up and take away opportunities and deliberately hold you down while maligning your character...

here, if and when you contact all your elected officials, even those in Washington DC to let them know what's really still going on when the civil rights fight was allegedly won decades ago... they ALL ignore your plight or simply "wish you the best but there's nothing they can do"...

so please, before you think that people who can't get ahead are just making "excuses" for why they don't, you should look at things from the perspective of those of us that are being treated extremely bad by our own countrymen first.

Did you even read what I wrote? Your first sentence says you didnt. I even give an example of how someone has a better chance that someone else based on circumstances beyond their control. I said that just because your chances are not the same doesn't mean you can't achieve it.

BTW I grew up in Louisiana. A state people like to make fun of for poor people and poorer education, chronic medical condition since 8, abusive father, and now an engineering degree and a 6 figure household income. Yea I may not have had the same chances as others but that doesn't mean I couldn't make something of myself. In fact they were motivation.

The world works differently for MEN! And I did read everything you said. Because you were able to pull yourself up and out you naturally think other people can too and if they don't they're just making an excuse for being a failure.

I'm happy for you that life allowed you to find your way. flowerforyou But for a lot of us it doesn't. More so for us women. Sure, I hear about how a lot of women that I've met online have made a good life for themselves. But they don't live where I do and haven't faced the blatant discrimination that I've faced, so they, like you, can't even begin to identify with what it's really like here.

And I'm not the only woman being treated badly by my peers. Or the men around here.

I'm an outsider and it's a cultural thing. Two strikes against me right from the gate.

Oh there is a lot of delusional reasoning going on, but it's not on the part of those elected "elitists" as you call them. They have no delusions whatsoever, and likewise it's not them that isn't living in the real world. The majority of Americans live in the world of the ignorant masses, living a life of fear and uncertainty, begging the elitist to throw more alms.

Electing those that will put more restrictions on the other guy and the other guy electing those that will put more restriction on you. A vicious circle with but one outcome, them and the slaves. So just who lives in fantasy land, well, it sure isn't them.

We all just accept our lot in life because we truly believe if we work hard enough we can improve our lives? And those who can't seem to get ahead no matter how hard we struggle it's our own damn fault so we just eagerly wallow in defeat?

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither and will lose both." - Benjamin Franklin. The rooster has come home to roost! You must be careful of what you ask for, most of the time you get it.

To understand the answer would be not to have asked the question.

Seems to me if we had any superpower at all our country would be the best in the world already.

Oh, we were the absolute best that this world had ever known. There was prosperity everywhere, from a new little fledgling to a massive power in a little less than a century and a half, and then the country turned ignorant. And over the last century, the ignorant has grown and the country has diminished. From greatness to less than a has been in less than a century, and the beat of the downfall is yet to come.

But just who is responsible for this horrendous mess?

And they are both related, it's called ignorance. The negative aspect of one's Internal Expression is confusion, or what could be deemed Internal Anarchy (no ruler within). Confusion is the state of mind in which the being is ruled by fear and ignorance. Confusion could be seen as internal opposition, or being torn apart from within, such that one's thoughts, emotions, and actions are in perpetual contradiction to each other.

Not waning at all, just need tighter control of the slaves, dropping welfare means more for the military, good for all. We could even have a new national slogan, "You make, we take".

This is just a big pile of hogwash, to even pretend to be the only woman in Alabama is purely ridiculous. This country is a massive slave pit, both male and female but to try and insinuate that woman are bigger slaves than men in that state is just not true. Men normally treat women just as they want to be treated, so I would suggest a look in the mirror would show you where the problem lies.

And to call every "elected" official to help with your little personal conspiracy, I guess you got your answer. And to actually think a politician gives a good rat's a$$ AFTER they got your vote would be paramount to you getting done right there on the bar stool and expecting "him" to have any respect longer than it would would take to order another beer, that is if you were paying.

The Dark Ages still reign over all humanity, and the depth and persistence of this domination are only now becoming clear. This Dark Ages Prison has no steel bars, chains, or locks. Instead, it is locked by mis-orientation and built on mis-information. Caught up in a plethora of conditioned reflexes and driven by the human ego, both warden and prisoner attempt meagerly to compete with God. All are intractably skeptical of what they do not understand. We are powerfully imprisoned in these Dark Ages simply by the terms in which we have been conditioned to think. - R. Buckminster Fuller

Excuse never got anyone other than where they are. Some make excuses as to why they must do and why it is they that are responsible, while others make excuse of why not, both end up where their excuses put them.

Because you were able to pull yourself up and out you naturally think other people can too and if they don't they're just making an excuse for being a failure.

Stopping there would have been more than appropriate.

What we care enough about to put our will behind is ultimately what gets created in the world. The world is the way that it is because most people do not care enough (even if they SAY they want things to be different) to change it through their actions.

The ALL is mind. The universe is mental. Thoughts lead to the manifestation of things and events. Thoughts create our store of existence and the quality of our experience here on earth. Therefore, be responsible for everything you create by being responsible for everything that you think. Everything that happens has to do with the mental state that preceded it. Thought forms first and then they form the physical reality afterward. If you want to change reality, then you must change the way you think because the way you think is not conducive to the requirements for getting what you say you want.

it was a complete thought, I'm sure anyone with even an elementary education could figure it out

"a widening wealth disparity weakens the nation"

"wealth disparity" is the SUBJECT being discussed and performing the verb

"weakens" is the VERB,

and "the nation" is the OBJECT which the verb acts upon

"wherever the nation is, and whichever the caste which the disparity affects" are called PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES(wherever and whichever being the prepositions)

"racial ,gender, or any other" was added to give examples of types of castes

RACIAL being specifically mentioned in the OP and

GENDER being one that the mingler starting this thread most often refers to herself,,,

There is a wealth disparity in the US. It's caused by the ones that want to work, get educated, get ahead and the ones who don't.
