Living Hating Dying

When I closed my eyes
I could feel life sigh
as if my breaths were escaping
I could feel time’s hands pause

My thoughts drift back to when I lived
through winter’s cold mornings
to its bitter nights
knowing that spring would soon appear
with the flowers blooming
and the birds singing
it was so hard waiting
knowing
anticipating
feeling the sun’s warmth upon my eager soul
and watching the children play
feeling alive

I thought about how much I shivered
angry
as though winter were my sworn enemy
there was so much disdain for the snow and gloominess
that I couldn't appreciate life
I thought of the seasons before winter
from the symphony of colors swirling ever so gently to autumn’s rhythm
to the warm summer months of sunshine laughter and life
yes
I hated winter

And yet
when I closed my eyes
I could feel life sigh
as if my breaths were escaping
I could feel time’s hands pause
Spring had arrived though unexpectedly
it brought with it
the sadness of rain
