As a non US person can anyone tell me if I should expect messages from people in the US to be a certain level of written English? As a kind person I give them the benefit of the doubt for a few messages but when it becomes hard work trying to work out what they're saying I give up. Also incorrect grammar, no punctuation and lack of capital letters get my goat.
I can understand a little lacking, maybe they haven't lived in the US long and their native language isn't English .............

I have met some Americans in this forums whom I could barely understand their posts and messages , I asked other people and they told me that this may happen in certain cases , where the American citizen belongs to some ethnic community , or suffers from specific disorder that makes them write words incorrectly .

I've had a lot of marriage proposals from men in India, and Nigeria. Clearly scammers, and using fake photos. Their also very nasty when they don't hear what they want to, and a few have been threatening.

Used to have that as well here.. Then I read that a good profile text stops them from harassing you. I changed my profile text. No more writing in negatives like "if you are blablabla, DON'T contact me" --> this seems to attract w@nkers. And no summaries of what a guy should be like. Just a good profile text.
And .. amazingly enough it DOES work! I don't get harassed by afore mentioned nationalities no more (knock on wood). I do still get scammers, mostly ppl pretending to be American or Canadian. Their bad English a clear indicator.
But I don't mind. Hardly ever communicate with ppl that aren't on the forums, so I simply delete.

I'm still getting it. I've been proposed to about 15 times in a few days, and so far I've been asked for many thousands of pounds and one even asked for a million. Lmao

Do i look like a millionaire lol, if I was I would have diamonds implanted all over me so I would sparkle in the light just like Edward did in twilight. Sexy smitten smitten smitten smitten

It is important to remember that not everyone who joins a dating site will have good intentions. Not everyone on Internet dating sites is looking for love, some may be hoping to scam their next potential victim.

Yes, correct... I've wondered about that myself as well. But .. if this was the case, it would mean that some 80-90% of ppl on Mingle - who claim to be American - are from a minority group and/or have a disorder???

I would really like to know how this works out in the States, but I seriously doubt 80-90% of ppl in America speak/write crap English??? And I'm basically talking about white ppl here, cos most of whom approach me are white. Well, their pictures are, lol.

Well, that ain't true ... I think there's a whole lot of ppl from 1st world countries that don't speak or write English that well at all.
Take Germans for instance, or the French. Most Dutch do speak English, but in spite of extensive English teaching at school... appallingly bad!!
Not sure about Belgians, I have serious doubts...
And the English I've seen from Austrians wasn't to write home about either :/
So sorry to say not everyone from 1st world countries speak or write good English. I think a great number of 'em are rather fluent in French.

I agree FOX, I travel a fair bit and incorrect use of English is a thorn in my side. The Australian and New Zealanders don't speak correct English and I had a broad Australian accent until my mid teens so no prejudice intended.
One reply to this query from the US used the language incorrectly but then I'm picky frustrated
Thanks for all the replies though, food for thought!

This is very true. All we can do it be aware that they are on dating sites and report them. Thanks for posting!

Many claim to be engineers or doctors and really butcher the English language.

I use the block feature a lot!

Scammerz can come from anywhere..i mean from any country...Nigerians do that too.
But it doesnt mean all Nigerians are scammerz..
Met a lady and text "hi dear how r you" and the reply is "i heard all Nigerians are fake and scam pple to get money"
..it pained me. Thats pretty bad. I because of it wrote something on my profile to avoid such statement. Its better somebody dnt reply at all. Than to reply me with that.

I've been reading as this thread progresses... Three pages in, and I am
absolutely jealous, that no overseas scammers have contacted me.
All I get are the domestic U.S. scammers.
frustrated

Scammers usually claim to be Americans traveling or working abroad.

Therein lies the problem.
The scammers (2) that I've encountered on this site, are Americans, living in America, and
both claimed financial hardships.

I never get the overseas scammers.frustrated
