"This is not a plot to take away everybody's guns," Obama said in a ceremony in the East Room. "You pass a background check, you purchase a firearm. The problem is some gun sellers have been operating under a different set of rules."

Recap of the EO...

The proposed executive order, which is
expected to be announced by the president
on Tuesday, would:
- Require gun sellers who operate at gun
shows and on the internet to be licensed,
and subject them to criminal prosecution
that can include up to five years in prison
and a $250,000 fine if they are not.
- Close a “loophole” that allows gun
buyers to acquire items like machine guns
without background checks through a
“gun trust” (paywall), a legal entity
originally created to allow gun owners to
pass weapons to their family members. The
number of gun trust applications grew
from fewer than 900 in 2000 to more than
90,000 in 2014, the White House said.
- Add 230 new Federal Bureau of
Investigation staff to process mandatory
background checks, and 200 more people
to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and
Firearms to enforce existing gun laws.
- Make gun dealers responsible for
reporting guns that go missing.
Spend another $500 million to “engage”
individuals with serious mental health
issues in care.

If anyone can find a detailed explanation of this...especially the first point....feel free to post it. All I could find were articles by biased sites on both sides of the fence.
It is vague and probably purposefully so...

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) released the following statement in response to President Obama's announcement of his executive order to restrict American gun ownership:

"From day one, the president has never respected the right to safe and legal gun ownership that our nation has valued since its founding. He knows full well that the law already says that people who make their living selling firearms must be licensed, regardless of venue. Still, rather than focus on criminals and terrorists, he goes after the most law-abiding of citizens. His words and actions amount to a form of intimidation that undermines liberty.

"No matter what President Obama says, his word does not trump the Second Amendment. We will conduct vigilant oversight. His executive order will no doubt be challenged in the courts. Ultimately, everything the president has done can be overturned by a Republican president, which is another reason we must win in November.

"We know that the president wants to spend this year offering distractions from his failed record. We will not allow this strategy to take us off course from giving the American people a clear choice with a bold policy agenda."

there is no website online where you can buy a gun and have it shipped to you without a background check like something on Amazon. All interstate sales must go through an FFL who has to conduct a background check. Even a felon couldn't buy a guy online, unless he knew an FFL willing to risk his license.
Always been like that!

Just for our northern friends.
The Constitution says the 2nd Amendment right "shall not be infringed" which means it shall not be limited or restricted. So, his executive order does undermine liberty.

This was about an opportunity to show he cares, that he still has some passion.
A shame he hasn't shown a tenth of this passion on the subject of the threat from Islam! There really hasn't been a "gun show loophole" for legal firearms sellers since 1938.
This was an opportunity for him to get on stage, perform, get a standing ovation, remind all the liberals, progressives and Democrats that he is still there and on their side and is DOING SOMETHING.
NOTHING in this announcement would have had ANY effect on any of the mass shootings that have occurred in the last ten years. Criminals almost never buy guns legally, which is more than 90% of the crimes involving guns.

And as much as anything, this was a opportunity, a major opportunity to castigate and denigrate the people who oppose him and the people who legally buy and own guns. You can bet there weren't any gang members, mafia members, drug dealers and bank robbers watching or listening to this crap.

You dont know how gun shows and online gun sales work....or have any knowledge of the laws already dealing with both, do you?

Big fail on what you had hoped to be a "gotcha" moment. Try again.
