Yasri Khan is the second Muslim Green Party politician to resign in acrimony this week. During an interview with a female reporter from TV4 on Tuesday, Khan placed his hand over his heart instead of shaking her hand in greeting. "People can greet each other in different ways. The most important thing is to show respect by seeing each other, to meet each other ... to respect each other," Khan said during an interview with state broadcaster Swedish Radio. Khan, also the general secretary of the organization Swedish Muslims for Peace and Justice, has faced strong criticism from within his party since the incident. "It is unacceptable. You can't have a man in the party who can't greet women in the same way you greet a man. I'm upset," Stina Bergstrom, a Green Party parliamentarian, told Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet. I wonder what would happen if a Christian, Jew or any non Muslim male reporter refused to shake the hand of a Muslim leader in a Muslim country.
I'm sure that would result in the non Muslim male reporter being called a bigoted infidel, deported or imprisoned for not respecting and adhering to what is customary within the Islamic culture. |

i don't like shaking anyones hand, male or female... it's a dirty, disgusting greeting that should be abolished for everyone...
but it just shows the outdated sexist ideologies the muslims use, keeping women on a lower level in the name of god... |

That these folks are quitting politics, and that green party people are speaking out against them is great news. I have nothing against Muslims. But I do have something against the many sexist muslims who are not willing to adapt to western culture. If they won't adapt to simple things like treating women with respect, what other regressive ideology are they clinging to?

That these folks are quitting politics, and that green party people are speaking out against them is great news. I have nothing against Muslims. But I do have something against the many sexist muslims who are not willing to adapt to western culture. If they won't adapt to simple things like treating women with respect, what other regressive ideology are they clinging to? umm... all of them... Yeah, I think that's a legit concern. But I've known some sexist muslims who were _not_ theocratic, so... there are some muslims who are willing to give up some of the worsts aspects of their beliefs, but not other terrible aspects. Baby steps? |

The one thing to do with this, is to think it ALL the way through. It's my own personal opinion, that anyone who wants to be a part of my country, must adapt TO my country. The thing to realize in this, however, is that if it were here instead of Sweden, that it would have broader implication than Muslims shaking hands with women. In the United States, we are all equal under the law. That is our ideal. If this had happened here, I would be glad to hear that the politician resigned, and I would hope he did so for better reasons than a fit of resentment. But this applies as well to non-Muslims. We have to decide the same rules for everyone. So before each person comes down on one side or the other, recognize that if a hard line Christian fundamentalist decided to refuse to shake hands with a homosexual, for example, that the same judgment would have to apply. Or if an atheist refused to show equal respect for a theist, or vice versa. Just make sure you don't ONLY cheer about this, because it was a Muslim. |

that would not have to happen in america since we reserved to ourselves the right to exercise our religion despite the state or commercial interests, or the interests of other religions or not. In america she would have had to recognize whatever gesture was appropriate, and it ends, or shall I say it should end there. |
