If you never actually met and it was just an online thing, try not to be so attached. The internet is a strange place and it is easy to get caught up in things, but until there's an actual relationship their, it's best to be cautious and try not to get too wrapped up in the "internet relationship".

Why do you feel "so lost...?"
Is it that big of a deal? Does it really turn your life direction a-kilter so you're "lost?"
Why?
And what are we talking about?
Just someone you started chatting with on the internet, never having met them in person?

Maybe you're forcing yourself to emotionally invest too much into an idea before the reality.

One danger with that, if you keep doing it, is training yourself to not appreciate what you have, even going so far as forcing yourself to devalue what you have, instead only focusing on what you think you could have.
And that just breeds unrealistic expectations and entitlement (after not getting what you think you're supposed to for so long, you start to believe that the disappointment is some kind of "payment" for something you now "deserve").
Which then leads to an inability to find satisfaction in anything.


Other than that, why are you using other people as your compass?
If you stop doing that, if they go away, you don't get "so lost."

Maybe you were both looking for different things, you wanted the chatting to develop into something more and they did not. Maybe they met someone else online living closer to their home town, there can be many reasons why. I believe that until you actually meet them in the real world, it's better not to invest too much emotionally, that way you may be disappointed but not hurt if it ends suddenly.
