Personally I always don’t mind splitting the cost of a meal.

best answer to the post I thinks..whoever that invited has the bill to take care of.unless the other offers an assit

This is a little off topic but I think germane to some of the comments. My rule of thumb is if I meet a woman in public and we've established some chemistry than I'm asking her out on a date. If I meet her online and I ask her out then I'm inviting her for coffee. A lot of women online perceive that as being cheap and even put in their profiles "COFFEE IS NOT A DATE"

Really? Sounds like some try to skip the so called "meet & greet".
I'm with you on this. First time meeting is a coffee and not an incredibly long meet either. Then, if both wish to see each other again, you can do something different that also takes a bit longer.

Thanks everyone for the help and advice, I have passed it on to them, and they were saying it's probably going to be a walk in the park and maybe a small picnic if the weather is nice.

That is really great!
With my ex it was always a bit tricky as I had a good income, he didn't have anything much and didn't want me to pay all the time. But we still wanted to go places and date etc.

Often we did something like a walk which could be the beach or the woods etc. And sometimes we got nibblies and drinks in the supermarket and had a picnic somewhere, enjoying good conversation, each other, and many times a glorious sunset :)
He had woollen ponchos in the back of the car, so if it got cold, we'd wear those.

Other times we went to the beach to enjoy, sometimes swim, then have a BBQ at the beach :)
Or we went canoeing before the BBQ (he had good inflatable canoes that easily fit in the trunk ).

Such things don't cost much and to be honest, to date those were the best dates I've ever had!

I actually agree that coffee is not a date. And the dude should pay for a date. Nothing gets a vagina dried up faster, than a cheap dude - and women are hypergamous.

Women want to be pursued, so it's not very often that they will do the approaching, to even make an offer. A woman does pay for the bad boy because she wants his attention - but we know where that road goes.

If there is true chemistry involved the first date should last awhile and there should definitely not be any talk of being short, then hopefully the one night stand turns into a two night stand. It should be more about her place or his place then her paying or him paying.

Well for me it all depends. If it is someone I have been chatting with online.. And we decide to meet then I make it very clear we pick a restaurant or place that is half way in between where we live and it is Dutch the first time.

If we meet for a second time I'm still all good with going Dutch...

After that and they ask me out then yes they should be prepared to pay, even if I do offer to pay for half once we have ate... or I will at least leave the tip..

Myself it does not bother me to pick up the tab from time to time... have done it and will do it in the future....

If I ask to go eat at a certain place then I'm prepared to pay for the meal...

Honestly Sweetie, you would never be offered, the pleasure of dinning with me...bigsmile

If you can't afford the price of a cup of coffee, maybe you shouldn't be dating.

Other than that; he who invites pays.

He who accepts the invite; offers to reciprocate in some way.

I agree with Mowtowndowntown comment.
