Why are squirrels so eager to climb slippery poles to get to birdseed that is normally not even part of their natural diet?

Why is this in the New Members Welcome Area and not somewhere else?

Someone once told me to never spit my gum on the ground, lest squirrels step in it and get all tangled up in its stickiness. I’m not sure if that’s even true, but I’ve always made sure never to spit my gum on the ground, just in case.

I learnt something similar last week ., I put out raw honey for tiny wax eyes (native nz bird that feeds on fruit/nectar ) only to look out later and see one completely stuck in the honey bowl . I had to wash all the honey off before he was able to fly away lol . He did lose a few feathers but thankfully it didn’t affect his ability to fly . Now I give them honey water in a feeder .
