The Return of Touch

welcomed like the return of a long lost friend
touch has come home

and you know what i’m talking about
don’t get bashful on me now…i’ll be nice

touch…
touch, like no other sense can make you feel alive
feel pain,
feel warm or cold,
feel empty inside or,
it can incite passion
touch can make the difference
between a good night’s sleep and
a restless journey through the dark
and sometimes lonely world
that separates our days
it’s that feeling you get
when you wake to find a
foreign yet, familiar
foot pressed against your calf
or maybe it is the comfort
of having an arm
draped over a sleeping torso
the skin on skin
contact shared between
chest and back
and appreciated
by contented
minds

yeah that’s the touch
i’m speaking of
and
touch has come home
bringing with it
the reminder
that a lap
is a perfectly
wonderful place
to rest a
weary head

If

if a word can make a difference
then I shall write you forever
never again will you be left to wonder
by a single silent syllable afraid to cross
the parted lips of a lover

if a song can make your heart light
I will build you a sanctuary to house
the robin and wren, nightingales
and whippoorwills will serenade you
to your heart’s content

if being desired is what you seek
my gaze will petition your senses
my lips will hunger for yours
my hands will crave your womanly treasures
and my heart will be numb to any other

if it is passion you need to fill your nights
my tongue will ignite fires
deep within your wanting soul
my kisses will engulf your every being
with hot stinging messages of love and lust
my body will be an extension of yours
and we will burn mountains to piles of ash

if…

More Than a Muse

She sings like
An angel

Her voice
Colors pastels

She’s held
Together with
Ribbons
And bows

She’s as fragile as
Can be
And as tough as
She needs

Where she
Comes from
Nobody
Knows

But,

She came
At the right time
To get me,

In my mind
She’s a woman
Of the finest
Design

She walks like
A lady
Sometimes talks
Like a baby

She’s a diamond
Just waiting
To shine

She floats like
A feather
In the calmest
Of weather
So lightly
She falls
To my bed

My fingers
Work pages
Familiar phrases
Of a novel
I’ve already
Read

I’ve loved you
Forever
Now I know you
It’s better

Than I could
Have ever
Possibly dreamed

You may not
Have been right
For the others
In your life

But, you’re
Perfectly
Perfect
For me

There never seems
To be enough time

With you

Yet each day
I discover something new

About you

Released
Revived
Revitalized

You touch me

True
Faithful
Dedicated

You have me

Inspired
Immersed
Captivated

You direct me

In everything you do

On A Bench, In The City

I sit here
In the shadow
Of the skyline
And I sit here
As the city
Cries
No longer a place
To walk or live
Choking
On the fumes
As the new day
Slave ships
Drive by
Overrun by
Corruption
Murder
And hate
We have only us
To blame for this
Fate
We stand by
Dying from paycheck
To paycheck
Minimum wage
Maximum rage
Profits soar
Lopsided score
Absentee fathers fast
On the children
Of the past
Finish first
Or finish last
Finish last
Finish last

And I sit here
On this bench
Remembering a time
When some of us
Cared
Awakened by
The knowledge
That surrender
Can abolish
Freedom’s swell
And we gave up
Long ago…
Turning this place over
To the misguided
Youth of today
Who spend their
Time trying to get
A piece of the bling
Promised by mtv
And the false heroes
Fashioned by
An entire generation
That feels a sense
Of entitlement
So many lives hang
In the balance
Swaying in the breeze
Created by a government
Turning its head
While the blades
Of corporations
Spin out of control
Fanning the flames
Of gimme, gimme, gimme
Too much is
Never enough

And I sit here
In the twilight of
My existence
And I cry for the city
Cry for the crackheads
The homeless
The whores
The grandmothers who
Shake in fear
As they crawl out of bed
Hitting the floor
Under a hailstorm of bullets
Aimed indiscriminately
But intended to do
Just
One
Thing…

Kill

And for what?
Some numbers on
A street sign
The color of a hat?
The shade of one’s skin?
I sit here
As the sun starts setting
I sit here
And say goodnight
To the city
Hoping
It simply wakes up
In time to
Survive

An Exercise in Futility

i woke up slow this morning
with a teardrop… in my eye

it was the same one i shed yesterday

and nothing changes, change
even frozen rivers flow
but the destined
solid surface
now, has nowhere to go

you spoke to me through angels
an angel, with a serpents tongue
and now you whisper distant
like the fading of a drum
you go on and release me
and tomorrow is but
a shell

this darkness seems to know me
oh god this hurts like hell

and i see you sleeping peaceful
while all i want to do
is fight
building walls
around the monsters
just to get me
through the night
the empty space
beside me
is my new found
prison cell
i can’t escape the thickness
of the indifference
you layer so well

go on and release me
release me to myself
release me from
the knowledge
that every fear
i caged inside
is swimming
for its freedom
in every tear i cry
i’m tumbling ever faster
in the violence of your storm
at the mercy of the current
and my arms are getting worn
i look through
the icy surface
in time to see the way
that you,
just,
walk
away

this darkness seems to own me
oh god this hurts like hell

Warm Salt

I bet you thought I’d catch you

Like so many times before
And I tried
I really did

But you kept falling
And falling
And falling
So many times…so many ways

I begged you, pleaded…please
Please stop!

But, it called and once again you answered…
looking at me through glazed eyes,
sweat and blood
I pray, when she gets older…she forgets seeing you like that

I can’t believe you’d forsake us so easily…

You missed the first day of school today.
She was so brave
As she entered the door and looked back at me all I could see…
was you

She needed you there…and tonight,
she asked if she could-
go sleep with mommy, “under the ground”

Just like so many times before
I am left to clean up your mess

I’m trying, love
I really am

God, I hate the flavor of
Her tears

Unattended Garden

as the rain outside begins to fade
the sun peaks out around the shade
iris dance in the winds of may
now it’s early june and the lilies play

out of the shade…

and i’m all alone in the garden we planned
watching the soil we groomed turn to sand
weeds choking out every breath i take
another lesson at the hands of fate

in the hands of fate

darkness falls - on me
through it all - i see

your pretty face
and i’m gonna try
not to
miss you

so i call your name but, it’s just in vein
i tried to love you but, it’s just the same
watch my world go from light to dark
too many olds to make a new start

just the same…

darkness falls - on me
close my eyes – i see

your pretty face
and i’m gonna try
not to
miss you

your face
your taste
your grace
your embrace

your smile
your touch
your voice
your love

darkness falls – on me
open my eyes – i see

i can’t deny
that i
miss
you

you, my friend, have an uncanny ability to do three things ...

1. hook me into a piece right away

2. create an affinity with the character(s)

3. convey powerful emotion through words

4. set up believable settings and scenarios

ok that's 4 but I was on a roll bigsmile

Now write the friggin book already ... before I think you just like hearing us beg

Infusion of Metaphor

They passed by again today

This kid and his dog
It is hard to tell which one is in control though

My money would have been on the dog

But, as they continue to repeat this daily ritual
The boy is gaining on him

Little

by

little...

Day

by

day…

The-

Alpha
Is
Changing hands

“Heel boy”

“Sit”...”Good boy”

Oh wait,
There goes a cat across the street

Down goes the boy!!!

All bets are
Off...

Friend, Lover. Wife, Life

I once knew a girl
And I called her friend

We laughed for hours
For days on end

We ran in the rain
And acted silly
Oblivious to the
Gradual diminishing
Of our youth

One day I kissed this girl
And I called her lover

A whole new world
For us to discover

We danced to the music
In our heads
And lived by the
Rhythm in our hearts
Acutely aware of
The growing possibilities

I took her hand
And called her wife

In the blink of an eye
Two new lives

We learned and we taught
All of us, together
She was our glue
Our sun
Our foundation
And she never wavered
Now the nest finds its self empty
And we find ourselves older
But, we are never alone

Sometimes she can’t remember my name
But we laugh at the wrinkles, just the same

I once new a girl
And I called her friend

I now know a life that
Without her, would end

I think about things as I lie awake
And it always comes down to this…

I didn’t always make the right choices
But, there is one I would never change

I think about all the times we’ve had
When we ran and played
The times we cried and fought
How we’ve grown
Good times
The struggles we went through
Diapers and sand
Trips and fevers
Our nights alone on the couch,
thankful for the quiet
Being pushed out of the bed
by the three of them
Cartoons and pancakes
School plays and rushed dinners
The chaos and the calm
Coming home; to a home

Yeah, I once knew a girl
And I made her my life

After all these years
I still sleep peaceful
For I know
Without her
Mine
Would have been
A life less
Lived

What Remains (Of The Damage Done)

I’d relinquish the
Fallacious
Possessions
Of a kingdom
For a lifetime
Of truth
In your eyes
If the walls
I’m fighting
Should crumble
Under the
Weight of the
Hooves
As I ride
And the dust
That soon
Settles on the
Mirror of life
Wipe away
Like your latest
Reprise

Allow me
Access to your
Sliver moon heart

Encased in
A mummified
Shroud of
Betrayal
And deceit
That I may
Plant a
More worthy
Seed
Deep in the
Very womb
Of your
Trepidation

Fear not
My temperate
Hand
Dissect my
Cerulean eyes
Look deep
Into a soul
Illuminated
By loves
Eternal flame
And shed the
Confining
Restraints
Of bygone
Repression

To live free
In "this"
Moment

Live free
In these arms
That sit
Idly by
Waiting for you
To surrender, to
Succumb
In spite of
The lingering
Effects you
So poorly
Conceal

Waiting for
The time
When you will
Be au fait with
The fact
That in my world
There was...
And never will be
Anything
Before you...
