The video clip shows swine flu vaccination commercials from 1976.

KSDK -- In 1976, doctors feared an outbreak of the swine flu virus could become a pandemic, and they took their message to the airwaves in the form of public service announcements.

The video to the right shows two PSAs taken from YouTube. In the first, people of different ages who believe they too healthy to be at risk of the flu are shown sick in hospital beds.

The second PSA shows how easily the swine flu can be transmitted between your family and people you interact with every day.

The 1976 vaccination campaign is considered to have been an overraction based on false information.

KSDK -- In 1976, health leaders feared a great plague could be coming.

A 19-year-old Army private at Fort Dix had died after contracting the swine flu and four other soldiers had been hospitalized with the disease. Health officials the potentially deadly disease could spread and bring a repeat of the Spanish Flu, which killed a half million people in the United States alone.

The Army private would be the only fatality due to the swine flu. Three million vaccinations were given out. The plague never came.

In St. Louis, thousands stood in lines and received vaccinations. In the video to the right is a story filed during the height of the swine flu panic.

1. Hasn't swine flu been around for a while?

Yes. Swine flu was first identified in 1930 when researchers isolated the virus in a pig. In 1976, more than 200 soldiers at Fort Dix,

......................

8. Wasn't there a vaccine at one time? Is there one now?

Yes, a swine flu vaccine was given to 45 million people in 1976. There is no vaccine now, although researchers are working on one.

The 1976 vaccine wouldn't be helpful anyway, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy & Infectious Diseases.

"That was a completely different virus than the virus we are dealing with right now, completely different in the sense that the genes are different, and it doesn't have any relationship," said Fauci. "The designation of each one was called the swine flu, but from a viral standpoint and spreading it is quite, quite different.

At the CDC, Sencer solicited the opinions of infectious disease specialists nationwide and, in March, called on President Ford and Congress to begin a mass inoculation. The $137-million program began in early October, but within days reports emerged that the vaccine appeared to increase the risk for Guillain-Barre syndrome, a rare neurological condition that causes temporary paralysis but can be fatal.

That's the troubling part if they hurry too quickly on making the next vaccination. People died from the 1976 vaccinations.

I read somewhere yesterday (I think) that this version of the swine flu is a combination of swine flu, avian flu and a version of type A flu, which is why there's no vaccine already. It's a type that hasn't been seen before flowerforyou

That's true - this is a different kind of swine flu.

Our news was covering what happened in 1976. I thought that the commercials for the vaccinations were interesting.

I don't remember getting the shots. I'm going to ask my parents about it.
