King William
The King William Historic District is located south of downtown and bounded by Durango, South St. Mary’s, Eagleland and the San Antonio River. The district encompasses land that was once irrigated farm land belonging to the Mission San Antonio de Valero, commonly known as the Alamo. When the mission was secularized in 1793, the lands were divided among the resident Indian families from the mission or sold at public auction. In the 1860s the area was subdivided into lots and laid out with the present streets. It was about this time in the mid-nineteenth century that a great many Germans, who had immigrated to Texas in the 1840s, began to settle in this area, and it became known as "Sauerkraut Bend" to the rest of San Antonio. The area developed into an idyllic neighborhood of large, impressive houses designed in the Greek Revival, Victorian, and Italianate styles. The main street into the neighborhood was given the name King Wilhelm in honor of King Wilhelm I, King of Prussia in the 1870s. During World War I, when America was at war with Germany, the name was changed to Pershing Avenue. A few years after the war ended the original name was restored, but this time it was given the English version of the name, King William, and it has remained so since.   In the early 1900s the King William area began to wane as a fashionable neighborhood, and by 1920 many of the original homebuilders had died and their children moved to other parts of San Antonio. During the 1930s and 1940s the neighborhood declined. Many of the fine old homes were converted into apartments, and only a few of the earlier settlers remained. Around 1950, however, the area began to attract a group of people who found its proximity to the downtown business district attractive and who, moreover, recognized the potential of restoration of the fine old houses and smaller cottages. An interest in preservation of the area was initiated, and it slowly became a "fashionable" and desirable place to live once again. In 1968 the King William neighborhood became San Antonio's first designated historic district. In 1972, King William was listed as a National Register Historic District. The district was expanded in 1984 to include the area of more modest late 19th and early 20th century homes between S. Alamo and S. St. Mary's Streets.

Fourth of July fireworks are fizzling out fast
There's already a countywide ban on sale and use of fireworks in unincorporated areas, and now, apparently for the first time, all local fireworks' shows have been banned or canceled because of concerns about wildfires. San Antonio joined other parched Texas cities in banning pyrotechnic shows on Independence Day, including those at theme parks and at the city's huge official holiday celebration at Woodlawn Lake Park, which will go on without fireworks. Military installations aren't governed by Thursday's order, but Lackland and Randolph AFBs canceled their fireworks' shows — though not their entire celebrations — following the city's decision. Citing fire dangers that weren't alleviated by this week's rain, the city said it won't grant any permits for fireworks shows, even those conducted by professionals such as the Woodlawn Lake and theme park shows. “Due to the extreme drought conditions facing the city, the San Antonio Fire Department is banning all public fireworks displays effective immediately,” a city notice said “This ban on public displays was deemed the safest course of action to protect the lives and property of San Antonio's citizens. As a reminder, the personal use of fireworks within the city limits is illegal,” the notice said. Similarly, holiday fireworks shows in Boerne, New Braunfels, Austin and other cities have been canceled as well. Bexar County's suburban cities aren't governed by San Antonio's ban, but none of them has announced plans to conduct shows, county Fire Marshal Ross Coleman said. Von Ormy, which allowed sales during a previous county-declared disaster, has instituted its own ban, Coleman said. And with about 140 of Texas' 254 counties banning holiday fireworks, San Antonians would have to travel east through several counties before reaching one with legal sale and use. San Antonio Parks Foundation, the sponsor of the Woodlawn Lake celebration, said the all-day event will go on as planned, with a kids' parade, music, food and attractions. “We'll have a full program of activities, beginning in the morning with the red, white and blue children's parade that's always a lot of fun,” said former Mayor Lila Cockrell, who leads the foundation. “There will be continuous music on the main stage and lots of wonderful food vendors. It'll go on until 9 p.m., when ordinarily we have our fireworks,” Cockrell said. The Air Force Band of the West performs at 7:30 p.m. “We had hoped ours (fireworks) could go on because they are set off in the middle of Woodlawn Lake, and any residue just falls into the lake. Obviously the city has acted on recommendations from the Fire Department; that's their decision and we'll abide by it,” Cockrell said. “It's still Independence Day. We still have a wonderful country. We're still happy to celebrate,” she said. A Six Flags Fiesta Texas spokeswoman said the theme park had planned “Lights of Liberty” fireworks shows July 3-4, but now the park is considering other types of patriotic displays. The park's nightly “Lone Star Nights” show involving lasers, video and fireworks will continue without fireworks. |

As of August 1, 2011, no permit will be required for this activity. Please note that boundaries for non-motorized water recreation activity within the city limits are subject to change by the City of San Antonio.
