Merry Christmas

I got a new pair of sneakers, $121 in cash, 2 Christmas cards, two pair of shorts, and a cutting board. I used the $121 to buy a new phone, a Netflix subscription, and a lunch of Chinese buffet.

I was fired from a job working with teen boys. I did a good job of course and the firing wasn't for poor performance but rather for having relations in a nearby community that reflected badly on the company I was working for.

I learned a new trade and got a new job and was happy for a while. The previous company sent me a Christmas card. I humpffed and threw it in the trash.

The next year I received another Christmas card from the teen ranch. I didn't trash it immediately but filed it away with the rest of them.

The third year I received yet another Christmas card and had some problems with my career. I called the company sending me the cards and got an interview and actually went back to work for them and stayed there for years.

If they hadn't sent me those Christmas cards I would never have went back to work for them but each year was a gentle reminder that eventually I acted on.

Just a moment to encourage you all to think of your family during these interesting economic times.

I just took a present (a cast iron frying pan) to an Aunt and Uncle that lives close by. We don't have a great relationship and only see each other maybe 4 times a year even tho we live in the same small community. They had invited us over for Thanksgiving and during the talking I discovered that they didn't have a single cooking instrument that was cast iron. Being a good ole southern boy I went and bought them one and boxed it for Christmas.

I also bought my 5 nieces and nephews each a day planner for 2009.

Your family may not be the best and you may not get along with them but a kind gesture and some warmth of heart may overcome these reservations for a day (or a lifetime).

Alas it was not to be today.

She emailed and said her dog was sick and that she had taken him to the vet and wanted to stay home with him but offered to meet me next weekend. Unfortunately I think it will be after New Year's before we actually meet.

On a side note I did not get a gift. I almost bought a small Christmas ornament but refrained at the last minute.
