Unexpecting mom gives birth in bee costume

BLACKPOOL, England, June 10 (UPI) -- A British woman who didn't know she was pregnant says she was calm when she delivered a baby boy while dressed in a bumblebee costume.

The birth came 14 weeks prematurely in a hotel room in Blackpool, England, where Ally Ashwell, 30, was for a costumed celebration of the upcoming marriage of one her friends, The Daily Telegraph reported Tuesday. After delivering the child, Ashwell wrapped him in a blanket and called for an ambulance.

They were taken to a nearby hospital, where the tiny baby is reportedly doing well after surviving a crucial 48-hour period after the birth.

Ashwell, of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, told the newspaper she left the party in the bee costume because she didn't feel well and "didn't want to spoil the fun."

"He was tiny," she said of her new son, Owen. "Instinct must have taken over, as I think I was quite calm. I wrapped him up and tried to keep him warm. The paramedics came and they said they had to take him straight to hospital or he wouldn't make it. Everything after that is a bit of a blank."
