A Condom Like No Other! Made of WHAT?
Call it the rainforest condom. The government of Brazil is manufacturing condoms made from the rubber trees in the Amazon, a move that the country's health ministry hopes will help preserve the largest rainforest in the world. These condoms are the only ones in the world to be made of latex harvested from a tropical forest.

The BBC News reports that by making their own condoms, Brazil will cut its dependence on imported contraceptives, which it gives away free to fight AIDS in one of the largest such programs in the world. Brazil is the world's largest single buyer of condoms. The new condoms, which will be sold under the name Natex, will be produced in a state-run factory with an output of 100 million annually. It is expected that the condoms will not only generate income for the residents of the Amazon with 150 new jobs, but also will be manufactured without destroying large areas of the rainforest. A win-win for all.

The latex will come from the Chico Mendes reserve, an area named after the famous conservationist and rubber tapper who was shot dead in 1988 by local ranchers, reports the BBC.
