When a couple goes in to a clinic for IVF treatments many embryos are created. Typically several are implanted in an attempt to create a viable pregnancy.
Those unused embryos can be stored, donated to another female or discarded. When Bush vetoed the bill he surrounded himself with children that were the products of donated embryos. While this is a fine thing to do there are way more unused embryos than there are women to carry them to term. So, if Bush finds this business so morally offensive why allow IVF treatments at all? Why not use embryos already created for research? Is throwing them in the garbage a better option? There are already promising medical treatments coming out of embryonic stem cell research. It's a crime that we are not exploring this avenue like we should. |
