CNN sends Congressman Gary Miller’s comments down the memory hole
By: D. H. Williams @ 9:52 PM - EST Over the last 24 hours a quote from Congressman Gary Miller has been circulated around the web, but finding the original source for that quote is not easy. Calling the Congressman’s office was not much help. I called to verify the quote earlier today and one of his staff transferred me to another Congressman’s office. Why? To avoid answering my question? Because he thought it is a funny prank? Perhaps answering to the Sovereign People of The United States is not a priority in Congressman Miller’s office. I was told by the staff member to whom I was transferred that callers inquiring about Miller’s statements where being misrouted all day long. Finally with a little investigative work - ok I really just used Google cache I was able to locate the original CNN piece containing the now infamous quote. The original article is titled, “House debates bailout bill” however it was replaced by CNN with a new version called, “Bailout plan rejected - supporters scramble” some time after 8PM EST last night. In the new version you will find no mention of Congressman Gary Miller. In the original version CNN quotes Rep. Gary Miller (R-CA) saying, “If you just solely rely on the phone calls we’re getting from home, listening to people who don’t understand the complexities of our marketplace and what we’re dealing with here, the easiest vote for you to make would be a no vote today. You have to go beyond that.” Does Congressman Miller believe the American public is not capable of an intelligent informed opinion on the passage of the Paulson bank bailout bill? Does this quote by Miller suggest that indebting not only this generation but generations yet unborn is the job of the elite who run Washington and the people who placed him in his job have no voice? I would ask him personally, but his office isn’t taking my calls. |

You must give Congressman Miller his due however as he does know how to turn a profit.
In 2002 Miller sold 165 acres to the city of Monrovia, CA, making in excess of $10 million. Now the average American Joe who does not understand the compexities of the marketplace would have to pay up to 31% in federal taxes on that profit. But Mr. Miller who does understand the complexities of the marketplace told the Internal Revenue Service and the state of California that Monrovia forced him to sell the property under “threat” of eminent domain. This allowed him to shelter the profits from capital gains allowing him time to reinvest that money. Monrovia officials say that Miller sold the land willingly and they did not threaten him.
