Tuesday, October 7, 2008 TEHRAN (AFP) - Iranian fighter jets have forced an aircraft carrying US troops to land in Iran after it entered its air space without permission, the Fars news agency said on Tuesday. “After a day’s interrogation, it emerged that the aircraft did not enter Iran intentionally and it was allowed to leave for Afghanistan.” State television said that the aircraft carrying the soldiers was a non-American civilian plane. “This plane was not a military plane and did not belong to the United States,” an unnamed official was quoted as saying by the website of the television’s Arabic-language Al-Alam channel. “But a few US military soldiers were in the plane,” the official added. The plane was forced to land in Iran on Sunday and allowed to fly to Afghanistan on Monday, the website added. The plane was forced to land in Iran on Sunday and allowed to fly to Afghanistan on Monday, the website added. A spokeswoman for the US Fifth Fleet Lieutenant Stephanie Murdock told AFP by telephone from its base in Bahrain she had "no information right now" about the Iranian reports. A Pentagon spokesman said none of its aircraft were missing. In April 2007, Iran released 15 British sailors and marines whom it detained for almost two weeks saying their vessels had strayed into its waters on the maritime border with Iraq. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/afp/20081007/twl-iran-fighters-force-us-aircraft-down-3cd7efd.html |

“This plane was not a military plane and did not belong to the United States,”
It was right there in the story, I just provided what it said. I'm not going to edit some article and still give the source it's credit, thats their job. |

I don't know either, maybe, they think since there were American soldiers on it, that it makes it a US plane by default?

Iran: Intruding Jet belonged to NATO
Press TV Wednesday, Oct 8, 2008 A Falcon jet that violated Iranian airspace and was forced to land in the Islamic Republic belongs to the NATO forces, a report says. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Falcon jet, carrying military personnel from various nations including Hungary, was heading to NATO bases in Afghanistan. The plane reportedly took off from Turkey and strayed into Iranian air space on September 30, a Fars News report said. Following the violation, Iranian fighter jets guided the aircraft from above the country’s northern provinces to Tehran’s Mehrabad airport and forced it to land. After interrogation of the the NATO personnel, and a full inspection of their equipment and papers, it was determined that the aircraft did not enter Iran intentionally so, it was allowed to leave for its earlier destination, Afghanistan, the news agency said. A number of governments, including Hungary, have apologized to Iran’s government for the incident. |
