Topic: Spreading The Wealth The Obama Way

(Sent to me by the way... didn't actually do this myself)

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign that read: 'Vote Obama, I need the money.' I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on a 'Obama 08' tie, again I laughed as he had given away his political preference -- just imagine the coincidence.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept.

He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $5 and told him to thank the server inside as I've decided he could use the money more.

The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

Everytime we buy something, we distribute the wealth. We pay taxes.

Except that there's a difference between not tipping someone who makes less than three dollars an hour and giving the money to a homeless person instead, and expecting the people who have enriched themselves, which in most cases would not be possible without the work of ordinary people making poverty wages or not much more, and who get better access to government services like schools and law enforcement, to pay their fair share of taxes.

okay, that sentence got away from me, but ya get what i mean.

That waiter was probably making $2.50 an hour.

He probably has no medical insurance.

He probably has no savings at all.

This story is really stupid.

Not relevant to real life.

whom should they guy have helped then??

The point is not how much the waiter makes. It is the waiter worked harder than the person on the street. Why the hell should that guy be able to tell the waiter where his money goes.

If he only had enough money to do one of the two, and he wanted to help the homeless guy, he should have eaten at home. Tipping is part of eating out in the United States.

Just because someone is homeless doesn't make them less worthy of help.
