Topic: Bible Study Anyone?

I was wondering if anyone would like to have a Bible study? I am thinking it would be very cool to post favorite verses, and if you can, try to keep the text size palletable and something someone can read through in a short setting.

I say that only because I have seen folks post dozens of scriptures one right after the other, for this study, let's stick to some favorites, and maybe limit each post to 3 or 4 verses. Feel free to post as often as as much as you'd like

Perhaps you might have a favorite verse, and a short paragraph about what it means to you, or how God has blessed you in some way with this verse. Or, maybe you have a favorite section of scripture, then just post the chapter and verse, and we can all look it up, rather than posting entire chapters here.

A great place to come for edification. Washing in the Word. Yeah, buddy....

I don't mean to interrupt your thread but I am confused about something. This forum says "Christian Singles" but I've never seen it before and can't find it. When did it get started?

I'll go first:

2 Timothy 2:15 –
"Study to shew thyself approved unto God,
a workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth."

This is one of my favorite scriptures because it is how God called me to go back to college in May of 2003. I had been out of work all of 2002, and I started to plan to go to college to add a diploma to my resume so that it would increase my chances of getting a job. I also needed a way to feel like I did not need to be ashamed, because I had been through a divorce the same year, and my self-esteem was at an all-time low.

Now it is 2008 and I have been going to college for 5+ years full-time. I will graduate with my bachelor's degree in less than a month, and in January I am already registered for a master's program. I am not stopping until I earn a PhD. I believe with all my heart that God is calling me to become a college professor. After about 6 more years of work at the university, I will earn my PhD and I will seek out the college God wants me to teach at. I look forward to being able to be a part of so many young lives. With a heart of servitude, I believe I belong in the world of academia.

I thought this was a cool verse to think about:

James 1:27
"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

sheeeeewwwwww... Just really enjoying this today... The beginning to the 2nd chapter of the book of James... how often do we see this today? The rich held high and the poor accosted? OUCH!!

This scripture speaks of "Respect of persons" where one status of individual is held above another.

I will copy/paste these verses, but there is more in that chapter if you'd like to go look. And speaking of which... if for whatever reason you do not have a Bible and would like one, e-mail me and I will go out of my way to make sure you can get a Bible so that you can study along with us.

Respect of Persons:

James 2:1-9

**********************

v1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

v2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;

v3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:

v4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

v5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

v6 But ye have despised the poor. Do not rich men oppress you, and draw you before the judgment seats?

v7 Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which ye are called?

v8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

v9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

1 Corinthians 10:13

There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

2 Corinthians 1:3,4

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort;
Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God

A lot is said in the first six chapters of Genesis, even the first two verses. To understand the beginning helps in studying the end.

Hi Tom! Great to see ya here.

Here's a little I can share that adds to your Genesis studies. I've always thought this was cool:

***********************

John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God.

3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

(((((((and verse 14:)))))))

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

***********************

In Genesis, the Word was there... "Let there be light" and all of that... God spoke the world into existence. The Word that was there with Him in the beginning was His Son Jesus.

This ties Genesis to John chapter 1 (the Gospels...)

To me, verse 5 there gives an example why so many folks just don't "get it" when it comes to God. It isn't a thing of the brain, its a condition of the heart... and it takes faith.

*********************

Hebrews 11
1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

*********************

Hebrews 11
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

*********************

Romans 10
17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Mark 14:23

But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things

Psalm 39
1 I said, I will take heed to my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I will keep my mouth with a bridle, while the wicked is before me.

2 I was dumb with silence, I held my peace, even from good; and my sorrow was stirred.

3 My heart was hot within me, while I was musing the fire burned: then spake I with my tongue,

4 LORD, make me to know mine end, and the measure of my days, what it is: that I may know how frail I am.

5 Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

6 Surely every man walketh in a vain shew: surely they are disquieted in vain: he heapeth up riches, and knoweth not who shall gather them.

7 And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.

8 Deliver me from all my transgressions: make me not the reproach of the foolish.

9 I was dumb, I opened not my mouth; because thou didst it.

10 Remove thy stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of thine hand.

11 When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

12 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and give ear unto my cry; hold not thy peace at my tears: for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner, as all my fathers were.

13 O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.

Psalm 32

1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.

4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.

5 I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

6 For this shall every one that is godly pray unto thee in a time when thou mayest be found: surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come nigh unto him.

7 Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.

8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.

9 Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

10 Many sorrows shall be to the wicked: but he that trusteth in the LORD, mercy shall compass him about.

11 Be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, ye righteous: and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.

Having come from an abused family as a child, and later in life having become a musician, the above verse 7 from the posted Psalm 32 hits home for me:

Psalm 32:7
"Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah."
