Mystery Bee Disappearances Sweeping U.S.

Without a trace, something is causing bees to vanish by the thousands.
But a new task force hopes to finger the culprit and save the valuable
crops that rely on the insects.

Pennsylvania beekeeper Dave Hackenberg was the first beekeeper to report
to bee researchers what's become known as colony collapse disorder
(CCD).

In October Hackenberg had delivered honeybees to a Florida farm to
pollinate crops. The bees typically return to their boxed hives when
their work is done. But this time was different.

"I came to pick up 400 bee colonies and the bees had just flat-out
disappeared," Hackenberg said. "There were no dead bees, no bees on the
ground, just empty boxes."

"In almost 50 years as a beekeeper, I've never seen anything like it."

CCD has spread throughout 24 states and ruined hundreds of thousands of
bee colonies.

Hackenberg has lost roughly 1,900 of his 2,900 hives. Other operators
have lost up to 90 percent of their hives.

Researchers are scrambling to find answers to what is causing the
commercially important honeybees to abandon their hives and disappear.

The epidemic could put a strain on fruit growers and other farmers who
rely on the insects to pollinate their crops.

An estimated 14 billion U.S. dollars in agricultural crops in the United
States are dependent on bee pollination.

"A lot of people think honeybees are only important for the honey they
produce," entomologist Maryann Frazier said. "But much, much more
important are their pollination services."

A couple of weeks ago local beekeepers were on the radio talking about
this occurence. One bee keeper takes the queenbee out yearly and
disposes of her so that a new queenbee will emerge which he hopes will
make the hive stronger.

I have a friend who likes raising bees, I see him from time to time with
a big bee-sting on his face or hand - I'll ask him next time

sorry Westdeck, you posted that one and wanted to discuss it seriously,
but you know when it comes to talking about honey, we cannot resist
making fun, have a nice day

The bees are gone because the weather patterns are messed up.

Bees pollinate, all species of flowers and plants, which so much of our
eco-system relies on...

The example of some of the above, show some of the reasons why the human
race will be no more in four years, if Einstein is correct.

Cause if it doesn't affect them right under their noses, they are going
to joke about it, and do the "Who cares?"

And my, oh my!! won't they care when they cannot afford the prices of
food when there are no bees to pollinate it and it dies...

And food becomes the rarest of all the earth's natural commodoties...

Fascinating Lisa, your profile says caregiver, forgive me, I was sure
you lead me to believe you worked within the sciences, something to do
with the outer universes wasn't it?

I had assumed that perhaps you ate fruit and vegetables like most do,
grains for your bread, and crackers, and flour for your cakes...

Without eating any of those I am sure the bees all over the world are of
no consequence to you..

Yeah I read about the bee thing...Bananas are suppose to be on their way
out too because of some kind of fungus. Researchers are desperately
trying to come up with a hybrid resistant strain. It would be drastic
for me personally cause I love bananas but apparently economies are
dependent on their export and would crash without them. Then there is
the whole ecosystem thing...seems like the whole world is falling
apart...then again...isn't this just what they call evolution?

yes i did mention that i was a member of the american federation of
scientists and yes i do study the effects of gravity on debris that is
knocked out of orbit but that dont pay the bills for me

so some of us do have to earn a living, as far as eating fruits and
vegatsbles and grains i do believe the worry of bees disapearing from
the earth is no worry, i believe eienstien's
beliefs are based on the mind of a mad man sure one can say that
all mankind would dissapear from earth if all the bees were to dissapear
that is the same as saying if all the grains of sand turned to dust we
would choke to death. perhaps the occurances of bees disapearing from
keepers nests are because the bees know they are not to be kept in
captivity.
if you really believe that the production of all foods such as the ones
the bees pollenate will diminish then we as sientists have failed in our
jobs to create a way of keeping our sources
from being totaly in the hands of mother nature
get real do you honestly believe that the threat of bees disappearing
will cause mass starvation

Lisa, do you really want a world where everything is synthetic?
I don't, I believe in natural things. Bees have always been kept and
suddenly they should remember what freedom is? Even in a hive they have
all freedom in the world to come and go, to gather honey and raise their
young. How do you think we can pollinate everything without them. Get
real
